The Fry's ad in the Houston Chronicle yesterday, Wednesday, March 15, showed a dual core Intel cpu (the 805), and a motherboard for $159.99. Today, I went over and picked up one. The cpu is retail, complete with HSF. The motherboard is the ECS RS400-A, based on the ATI RS400 chipset.

Here is a link to the motherboard information on the ECS website:

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/P...il.aspx?DetailID=507&MenuID=93&LanID=9

I am installing Windows XP as I write this on another computer. More to follow.

I'm in Houston also and I'm very interested in how well the 805 overclocks on that mobo. I may have to get one if your results are positive. Please keep us informed.

So far this is not going well. I am on my 4th attempt at installing XP. The sucker keeps hanging up. I have flashed the BIOS to the latest from the ECS web site. I have increased the Vcore and Vdimm slightly. I have dropped the memory timings to 166 (this is a matched pair of Mushkin 512 meg PC3200 SIMMs). The cpu is at default 133 FSB. I have been reading reviews, and it seems this board is very picky about memory, which is why I just dropped the memory to 166 and started over again on installing XP.

Other than the memory and the power supply, this is not using any extra components. The video is built in, and I have not added any plug-in cards. The power supply is an Enermax 465 (20 amp on the 12volt rail). If it keeps hanging up, I will try a different power supply.

Here's a link to one review:

This is definitely a no-go. I have tried two different known good pairs of memory, and another two known good single sticks. And a different power supply. The sucker crashes in CMOS setup now -- definitely getting worse. Looks like I will have to travel over to Fry's again tomorrow.

From the looks of the Hardwarezone review that htne referenced, you may wait a long time for the BIOS that unlocks even a modicum of O/C potential.

this is mighty tempting as it's backwards compatible with my ram, etc.....should I jump in the car and head over to Frys? heck, is this deal available in SD, CA?

It has settings in the CMOS setup for FSB from 133 to 510 (??). It also has Vcore settings of normal, +3%, +6%, and +9%. Vdimm allows normal, +50mv, +100mv, and +150mv. From this, one could expect to overclock at least some. Depending, of course, on what the cpu is capable of. But the one I have here is just flat unstable.

I can't even tell if it is recognizing the cpu correctly. During POST, it displays a graphics screen advertising the motherboard, and I have found no way to turn this off.

DITTO - I'm researching the web right now to figure out why it keep crashing

Bought the combo last night, but is having trouble stabilizing :(
It keep crashing.....................................Very frustrating
I'll post updated later, when I try a more powerful power supply

RS400? not supporting dual core AFAIK

maybe you got the wrong mobo combo

like, it was probably supposed to be the ECS 945P-A, but they grabbed you the RS400 instead (something similar has happened before)

This morning's ad (Friday) shows "Intel Pentium D Processor 805 & Asus P5RD1-VM Motherboard" for $199.99. The Asus web site does not state what cpus this motherboard will support. This motherboard is based on the same ATI chipset as the ECS board I purchased yesterday. This is a micro-ATX motherboard (the ECS board was std ATX), it only supports DDR (the ECS board supported DDR and DDR2), it does not have the crippled AGP slot, only PCI Express, and the onboard ethernet is 10/100 (the ECS was 10/100/1000). Before I go off to Fry's, does anyone know if the dual core cpu will work on this Asus motherboard? I need to know whether to exchange and pay the difference, or just get a refund.

Goto Asus CPU Support Page and go thru the drop boxes to see what CPUs that board will and will not run, according to Asus.

For those too lazy to click on the link, I see on the page that the P-4 D 820/830/840 are listed as compatible with the 0501 BIOS. I do not see any other 8xx listed, although others might work.

Uh, you guys might have recieved the wrong board after all. I was looking at this combo when it was advertised in the SJ Mercury here. According to the ad, you should have recieved the RC410L/800-M. Per ECS, the board does support the Pentium D 820. I suppose support for the 805 is assumed as well.

To those that bought the combo, did you recieve the RS800A or RC400L?

i hope that's not a mistake on Asus' part. You'd think that if this board supported Dual Core, they'd advertise it in the main mobo page here
but instead it states "Supports Intel® Single-Core 65nm Processors" and "This motherboard supports the latest Pentium 4 CPU from Intel in LGA775 package. With 1066/800MHz FSB, MB L2 cache, Hyper-Threading Technology and core-speeds up to 3.6GHz and beyond, Intel's LGA775 Pentium 4 is one of the fastest desktop processors to date." No mention of Dual Core anywhere. GG Asus! If anything, i bet their 0803 beta bios would support it

:frown: .........I try 3 different power-supply: with and without 24pin ATX connector.
Makes no difference. The setup is completely unstable and crashes randomly.
I figure it might be the different memory capacity (512+256DDR) that is causing the crash,
I removed the 256ddr....the system seem more stable.....(for an extra 5 minutes), then sudden crash again.

That is it! I packaged up the combo and return it to FRY's this morning.
I don't know who is @ fault: Intel, ECS, or ATI............but don't care.
When I buy a Pre-Package combo, I expect it to work (period).

hardly any of the mobo manufacturers update their websites to reflect new processors that their boards can take. this goes especially for ECS, what a POS maker. However, if you really want to find out if a mobo supports certain processors, either email their tech support and tell them to find out (not just read the specs off the site) or check the bios revisions. Most of them clearly state when they add support for new processors.

i'd go with $199 deal with p4 3.2ghz + rs400 mobo.

i got 3.2g deal and happy with it.

i think ecs mobo sucks though.. i might get new mobo soon.
ecs's usb and agp seems too be slow.

i just replaced all the parts from my old p4 2.0ghz(asus mobo) and when i transfer my files to usb harddrive, it takes like 20 minutes longer than before.(for 4gb files)
