:brokenheart: They had this deal a while back but I didn't act - don't remember if it was Outpost or some other B&M. Somebody buy me one - it would go sweet with an AIW deal I found for a media PC!

Link.

just a friendly warning to anyone in the bay area in ca...
the fremont frys is selling open box cpus as new. and all of the ones that they had in stock as of sunday were open box. i got a new one from the concord frys. even the concord frys tried to give me an open box first and i had to ask for a new one.
the open box cpus frys claim to have tested and returned to stock but the thermal pad on the hsf is trashed and anyone not noticing this and trying to use the package as is came would get an overheating cpu.

Thats a good deal. Now I only wish we had Fry's here on the east coast.

There is one in Atlanta :)

Good deal on a dual core CPU/mobo combo!

How can I make sure I'm getting a new CPU? If it's open box will it be obvious? Or do I need to open the box myself and look inside at the cpu/fan?

the first one that i got was an open box that been carefully taped shut and was not obvious. i only noticed when i got home and saw the tape. the others that they tried to give me were obvious. if you examine the box carefully, you should be able to tell.
i have to say though, this is a pretty rude thing for frys to do.

Darn straight it's rude. You said Fry's in the Bay Area? Was this the one in Palo Alto by any chance?

no, this was the fremont frys and the concord frys (though the concord frys eventualy gave me a new one)
but i dont think that it's specific to any particular frys, it just seems to be the way that they do business. caveat emptor
