OK my question I hope is pretty easily answered. I have a Penitum 4 machine with a dead fan on the heatsink. Are Socket 478 and 423 compatible?
 
I'd do the zip ties if this weren't for a customer. I have a 478 cooler available or I can order a 423/478 cooler. This guy probably doesn't want to wait that long though.
 
Sorry, sock478 heatsinks will be too big to just bolt on without mods.

Try to attach a new 70mm (or mod an 80mm) fan onto the customer's 423 heatsink.

There are 70mm to 80mm adapters available.

EDIT: Sorry, for some reason I thought 423 heatsinks used 70mm. Just read your post stating 55mm.
