Hi All

i'm upgrading from a 1.8ghz to a 3.06 ghz 533fsb socket 478

would it be ok to use the stock heatsink from the 1.8ghz?
I won't be doing any OC'ing or anything~

I would say no. Did you mean heatsink AND fan or just heatsink? Either way, I would get a new one. Heatsinks/fans are so cheap nowadays you could get a very capable cooler for not very much.

I say use the stock HSF from the 3.06GHz you get, if you get the retail box; otherwise get a 3rd party HSF. I have no idea on the changes Intel made on the in-package HSFs, but I do know that the 3.06GHz P4 is much hotter than the 1.8GHz.

Now, this 3.06GHz would be Northwood core, right?

I peeked at the typical wattage for 1.8's and the 3.06 at Sandpile.org. The 3.06 will be putting out about 30% more heat than the 1.8GHz.

I wouldn't use the heatsink from a 1.8 with a 3.06. Why not get a retail 3.06, so it comes with a heatsink, although the fan for it is pretty loud. I replaced mine with a thermalright SLK-900u, and a much quieter fan. Now I have an XP-120 on my 3.06 and it is running at 3.45ghz.

I say it will be just fine, the heatsink from a 1.8ghz northwood is the same I had with my 2.4C and i used that heatsink to OC to 3ghz & the stock heatsink handled it just fine.

Unless you plan on some overclocking & adding extra volts to your cpu that 1.8ghz northwood heatsink will be just fine.

No overclocking there's no need to get an other heatsink, try it and if you find it's not up to par them start looking for a better one.

As it is i think you would just be wasting money.

yes, northwood
i'm getting OEM 'cuz it's a lot cheaper... could buy a $15 shipped heatsink/fan at newegg... would that suffice?
judging from most of the ppl who responded... it sounds like it'll run a lot hotter~

Why don't you get a retail box? it only costs like 3 dollars more.

Yes, if you get a 3rd party hsf that was designed for that P4, youll be fine

well i'm not buying from a store either...

does anyone have this cpu w/a matched heatsink/fan that they would recommend... I'm almost overwhelmed w/newegg's selection...

note: i don't want to spend much more than $15 shipped~

I still say you're wasting money, that stock P4 heatsink you have now is more than capable of cooling a 3.06ghz northwood.

You can take the heatsink off a running P4 and it will underclock itself when it gets too hot. Tom's Hardware (no slams here please) have a video of them doing just that from a while back. Give it a try, if you find the temps too high or fan too loud, buy a nice HSF.

Got it yesterday... installed it along w/Cooler Master Dream III link

and it worked fine for about 3 mins, then it just stopped... and it did that for the next 5 reboots~

any clue as to what is going on?
