Pentium 4 840 or Athlon 64 X2 4400

There is actually almost no point in getting anything above the 820 pentium D. People have tried to overclock their processors, and the Pentium D starts getting unstable after 3.25 GHZ. So, If you know how to overclock, and get a proper motherboard, you can just buy the 2.8 GHZ Pentium D.

Another thing to take into consideration when choosing a processor is what the single core processors run at. The dual core 4400+ is clocked at 2.2 GHZ with 1 MB l2 cache, so we know that it is similar to the 3700+. Since AMD's name game is supposed to reflect performance compared to Intel's processors, that means the 4400+ will perform similar to a Pentium clocked at 3.7 GHZ, while the Penium D 840 will perform close to a Pentium 4 clocked at 3.2 GHZ. Compare 3.7 to 3.2 and you know which one performs faster. (And also, you can overclock the 4400+ to 2.6 GHZ easily, which is in fx-55 range, while the pentium D 840 will have almost no overclocking headroom)

Can you do this with stock cooling and stock voltage?
Or do you need a special hs/fan? And do you need to play with the voltage?

Thanks!

i saw someone get 3.0ghz on air with a 4400, probably was a cherry-picked processor though, 2.6 should be achievable on the stock cooler

besides an x2 or an easy bake oven, some people might want to bake a cake in their computer but most probably won't

Gotta love it, throw facts/links at the AMD slaves, and their heads spin.

Where are the facts and links you've thrown at the AMD "slaves", really I'm not saying I'm not an AMD fan, but fact is today AMD's got a superior product than what Intel has to offer, when/if intel releases a CPU that is better than the AMD equilivant CPU I'll say it's a better buy, but today an AMD is a better buy.

sure, ddr2 is cheap, but only if you get the crappy ddr2-533 stuff thats probably equivalent to pc2700. sure, they have 1000mhz ddr2, but it costs more than a 4400+.

id recommend the dual core. it wont help in gaming, but wouldnt it be nice if you could game while encoding a dvd? or do 2 other things at the same time, with minimal performance loss?

if you get a dual core, the X2 is far superior to the PD in almost every way. including: temperature, power, overclocking, and performance in most things.

What he said.

thx a lot guys, you pretty convince me to get the 4400 , so thats the one I will get... Money is not really an issues, its just I do not like to pay 40% more just to get like 5, 10 % of better speed.. that Why I will not go for the 4800 or the intel EE...

now what you guys will recommand me for board and memory for a 4400, again money is not really an issues but I want to pay for a good performance/price ratio... and I want to overclock the 4400 for shure... got my good old water system in my case and its working really damn good..

For overclocking, if you don't mind doing the extra research and tweaking necessary to get the best results, a DFI NF4 board sounds like the best for you. Deciding whether you want SLI or not then determines which model you should get. I'm not familiar with overclocking memory, so I'll leave that to others.

I would suggest 2GB of RAM, as games are starting to use it (BF2), and it will be more futureproof. This Crucial Value (get two sticks) uses the same ICs/PCB as Crucial Ballistics DDR500. You should be able to get 240MHz+ at 3-3-3. This reviewer got 251 at 2.8V, and 257 with 3.1V. You may be able to do better with the DFI boards too. You can get higher RAM overclocks with 1GB for sure, but memory bandwidth isn't very important with A64s.

I doubt that the board will come with the latest BIOS for X2 support installed, so you'll need to have a floppy ready with the newest BIOS and flashing utility for the first time you boot it up (by all reports, though, it should boot fine with an X2 on the older BIOS, but installing Windows and actually using the system may be another matter; please update to the newest BIOS before attempting any of that).

if doesn't have an X2 compatable BIOS, only one core is going to detect, but you'll still be able to flash it.

for the DFI mobo, get any RAM with UTT/BH-5/CH-5 chips, as they love the extra voltage the DFI gives 'em.

i'm trying to find a good utt or bh5 ram on the forum but I can't find it, and on major site they dont even say wich kind of chip they got... do you gto a good brand of memory who got UTT/BH-5/CH-5 chips

thx

Go to Xtremesystems.org

Check the Memory section and look for the stickies.

Your best bet is OCZ Value VX.
