Pentium 200mhz w/ 64MB ram uses?

I found an old computer system and thought it'd be nice to use it as an internet browser station. Which specific OS and Inet Browser should be used since the computer is not as powerful as today's windows pcs? I think it'd be cool to fit this into a much smaller & slimmer case since it's a Mid tower case with the huge power supply in the middle. If anyone wants the case, I'll let it go for $6 + shipping 🙂. Also, does any1 know where I can find cheap 15in lcd's that have good 2d image quality? All your suggestions are very welcome and appreciated!

Asus Motherboard (small size like micro-atx boards)
Pentium 200mhz MMX
64MB RAM
2 LAN NICS
1 Dial up modem
Parallel printer port
One 1.44 floppy drive
PCI video card
Sound Card with mic-in and line-in
 
You could try putting Win98 on it, and try to unbloat it... or maybe Linux? Haven't had experience with Linux, but I think that should bloat less than Winbloat...

Last month I put XP-Pro onto my P2-300/160mb RAM. It ran fine, without visual options and most bloat background services. Of course the RAM helped a lot, but in another comparison, it ran *faster* than it did when it had Win98se on it. It was the network drivers, somehow...

Internet Browsing is a very very light task... in comparison to today's uses. Opera should do nicely. Just don't let spyware in, or else!

Also, I thought it might be a good idea to OVERCLOCK this cpu. Good idea?

At most you could possibly get it up to 233mhz. That was the highest Pentium speed available until the PII came out.
 
Drop in another NIC and run smoothwall.

Thoose older systems do nicely running the linux firewall routing software. Also they give you alot more flexibility than the standard routers you buy at Best Buy.

I was playing around with some really old systems last year and on a similar system, 2000 seemed to run better than 98 even with 64MB of RAM.
 
Do a google on 98Lite. I haven't used it for a while but it allows you to delete much of the bloatware in Windows98. How about a 75Mb install. You can even jettisom IE and use Opera or some other browser. It would run well with what you have now. Check the Micro install version.

If that mobo is based on the VX or TX chipset, it cant cache > 64 Meg of ram, that is why it slowed down with 128. I'd use a minimal install of Win98. Linux has an undeserved reputation for not needing much under the hood. That is true to a point, but not when running a GUI. Most of the Linux desktops need quite a bit to run well. An older one like Afterstep would not be too bad.
 
I would try Linux if all you plan on doing is internet browsing, go check out This site ,do a little reading and I bet you will find the right distribution that will meet all your needs.
 
That ought to run 98 just fine. I had much same rig running it, just 33mhz faster.

It would make for a good dos/win 95 game box. Duke, Quake, etc.
