I am thinking of Buying a Geforce2 GTS for my p2 350 rig (soon to be 450)
Overkill yes, but I can upgrade the CPU & mobo later :)

Which card out of the Kyro2 or Geforce 2 gts would be better for running Counter-stirke in
1024*768 32bit color ?

And how much of an inprovment would I see over my existing video card a TNT2 Ultra?

Thank you for taking time to reply to my first post :)

Wow, well over 50,000 members and no one has used the name FPS.
Odd. Well, welcome aboard FPS.

A p2-350 should be alright for CS, it's based on Quake2 after all, and I played quake2 on my K6-2/350.

I'd use a GF2-GTS just becuase I know nVidia makes good drivers.
it's also slightly faster than the K2.

My first choise nic was taken :(

Actually I think Half life runs on a highly modded Quake 1 engine,

I am unsure about the kyro2 because of its unproven drivers and its slowdown when lighting efects are present.
thanks for replying.

I don't think you'll see much of a difference on such a slow processor between those 2 cards. Better consider an upgrade to some Tbird processor, will give you some important boost even with your TNT2:cool:

Ahh yes, I forgot about the lighting slowdown, that would be especially pronounced on your rig. Remember no T&L on the K2, and the L is for lighting. The GF2 can handle 8 (or was it 16) hardware lights...sure they aren't terribly flexible lights...but hey this is CounterStrike not Max Payne or Doom3 :)

It wont help much no matter what video card you get. Half-Life (CS) is very much CPU dependant, where as something like Q3 is highly video card dependant. So if your doing it for CS, upgrade your MB/CPU first.

Yep. I played both HL and CS on a PII350 with a V2. During heavy battles, it slowed down, but that was more because of the slow CPU than the vidcard.

Check if your motherboard can't take Coppermine CPU's, or at least a PIII with a Katmai core. If you're serious about good performance in those two particular games, you have to get as much CPU power you can get.

I got a Pentium II 350mhz and a 1.2Ghz T-bird.
Playing from 1 machine to the other, ingame there's hardly a difference. However, the connection/initialization times are longer on the P II.

If you check the review at aces hardware, the kyro2 does very badly on slower cpus. It did pretty bad on a Cele 667, so I think your 350 would be horrible.

Get the GF2, it has better drivers AND T&L.

Im getting a Geforce2
I cant afford a T-bird yet, and this mobo only goes up to a p3 600 , (not the cumine)
but with the gf2 i can still have a decent card when i save up for a mobo & cpu replacement.

I have to ask what motherboard you're running? And if you don't agree to buy a new motherboard, memory, power supply and shiny AMD processor, these guys aren't going to reply to you anymore! :D

Hey,I run Counter-Strike on my P200 MMX. Sure, I get killed after 20 seconds, but it runs!! ;) Anyway, with a GF2 GTS and your P2-350, you'll be alright.

FPS.

The P2B does support Cumine cpus, though if you have the first revision of the board you have to set the voltage to 1.8.

Half-Life is based on a highly modified quake1 engine... and for you who says is the quake2... quake2 is a modified quake1 engine.

Get "Leadtek Winfast Geforce 2 Pro GTS 64MB 5.5ns DDR RAM 4X AGP Video Card" over here. The price is $178 and it has free shipping. When the time is right, make the move to Palomino and dump the P2. Good luck.

I still use a PII 400 myself and I have a Geforce 2 GTS. I play CS at 1024 x 768 all the time and the only problems I have with it is lag from my 56K modem.

Go for the GTS...it's proven and will kick ass when you get the new MB and CPU! :D

This forum rocks :)

I can get the ASUS gf2 for £106 ($130 ish)
which is stretching my budget enough :(

Only problem with the ASUS is that its drivers are banned on PB (which I use for cs clan wars)

So I will have to replace them with some det's A.S.A.P

Also im slightly worried about removing the old tnt2 drivers, which are also Nvidia (not creative)

as ive heard horror stories of old voodo 2 drivers that cant be delted and slow even the best card down :(

it's true, CS is pretty much ALL cpu dependent.

i ran a k6-2 450 w/ the following vid cards:
i) voodoo banshee 16mb
ii) savage 2k 32mb
iii) TNT2 Ultra o/ced
iv) Geforce SDR
v) rage 128 pro

pretty much same performance on all of them.
dropped in a 791mhz athlon, and the game ran faster w/ a rage fury pro than the k6 ran w/ a geforce.

oh, haven't had any problems removing nvidia drivers...their uninstall literally removes everything (as far as i know)...even rebooting doesn't go to driver cache and try to retrieve the last used nvidia drivers even ifthe same video card is installed after teh uninstall of the drivers..
