My friend is going to give me his pentium 2 300 because he just upgraded to a duron 800. Is it easy to overclock this thing to 450? He has some type of generic LX motherboard with it. I've tried many combinations in the bios with the FSB and multiplier but the computer either wont boot up or it boots up at like 233mhz. I think the product code is slr28 (something like this) phillipines. Any help on my quest? thx

i think most LX boards only go up to 85 mhz.. i think u need a BX, i have a pII 300 too but the hard disk i have with it (seagate) doesn't like it when it goes up only to 333... but can do 450 easy with slightly better than stock cooling...

the thing is i cant overclock this cpu at all...it only goes down when i adjust the fsb. His LX mobo displays 100 and 133 for fsb speeeds... Does this cpu run 66mhz bus or 100? also, what is its multiplier?

Unless the S-Spec is SL2W8 (OEM) or SL2YK (Retail), you won't reach 450MHz.

The normal FSB is 66MHz, multiplier is 4.5. Most LX boards implement the 66, 75 and 83MHz FSBs. You should be able to get your CPU up to 337 (4.5 x 75) without too much problems. 375 (83 x 4.5) is REALLY pushing it unless you have really good cooling and a really good processor.

Most likely your CPU is clock limited, ie the maximum multiplier that you can use is 4.5. You may be able to use lower multipliers, but not higher multipliers. If you try to use higher mutlipliers, the system will boot at 133MHz.

The P2/300 is technically the worst P2 to overclock at all. It uses the old 0.35 micron core (was it Klamath?), runs on 2.8V and puts out 43W of heat (where were those people who saying duron/t-bird consumes too much energy and gets too hot back then? :) ). To get it reliably into 450Mhz you may need some really decent cooling...

Priit...you are wrong...
P2 300 are the best overclock P2 there is...
ask around for the infamous SL2W8 and SL2YK Pentium 2 300MHz cpu...
those are the first of 0.25 P2 and with 4.5ns L2..they can do 450
at ease and about 3 yrs ago those are the hottest cpu on the market..
paying less than half of real p2 450 and get the same performance...

Priit is actually correct. The VAST majority of Pentium II 300s were manufactured on the original .35 micron process as Klamaths. Only a very few were manufactured later on the .25 micron process as Deschutes processors.
