pentile

I hear a lot about it pro/con but I don't see too many picture demoing the problem.
Now, there may be a flaw in my thinking, but here is what I did:
Opened paint, made the picture size 1280 x 780, made a black background, numbered the left hand side like this:
1
4
9

Next to the 1, I put some different color single pixel dots, next to the 4, I put 2x2 squares, and next to the 9 3x3 squares.
I sent the BMP to my phone and I CANNOT see the single pixels. I can BARELY see the 2x2 pixels.

try looking for that "grid" pattern on light color sheet.
Seriously, I urge people to stop looking for the pentile matrix. Once you see it, you will ALWAYS look for it...

Well, maybe I would see a pattern if I made an all one color back ground? Anyway, my main point is that I cannot see a single pixel becasue they are so small.

I can see it clearly on my bionic, but reviewers are reporting much better results on later pentile screens. The Galaxy S 3 has a pentile screen for instance.

Here's Brian Klug in the AT review:

This is what I’m talking about when I say that in implementations such as the SGS3, even though PenTile is present, the logical pixel is still smaller than visual acuity, and the subpixels are half that. There’s still a case to be made for whether you can see fringing on black text on a white background to some extent, but personally I cannot see it.

The best way to determine this yourself is to compare a pentile screen to a non pentile of equal resolution side by side.

I have the same experience. The screens on the GalaxyS and GalaxyS3 don't bother me at all but I can't stand the Bionic.

Although, now having gotten used to the S3 the S screen seems fuzzy 😛

As already stated DON'T LOOK FOR IT, if you don't see it be thankful. While not the same issue, with my Nokia 900 I read about how bad the grays look when the brightness is set to low. I couldn't see it but I looked harder and sure enough there it was. After that I couldn't not see it, maybe it was the placebo effect but after that it was ruined and I ended up returning the phone because of it.

Seriously, what has been seen cannot be unseen.

Instead of reading reviews and looking at magnified images or test images to point out flaws, maybe go look at the phones yourself and let your eyes decide if it looks good or not under normal usage. Everyone doesn't see the same thing, and most probably wouldn't notice this stuff without being told what to look for.

If you pick up a phone with no prior knowledge to the display types and think it looks like crap, fine get something different. But don't go out of your way to find problems.

Has the phrase 'pentile dysfunction' been coined yet? Because some of you suffer from it.

Just got my Samsung Galaxy S3 yesterday. I can't see any flaws with the screen at all, but I'm not going to go out of my way to look for them. If you go out of your way to look for problems, you'll find them with anything. If you didn't know about the pentile display, I doubt most people would realize it was different.

Yeah, if it's not something that's immediately obvious then it's not really an issue. I went from a N1 to a G2 and noticed a huge difference in sharpness. Going from the G2 to the GNote was just peachy =)

So what would show the problem? Something like a light green background?

i went from a droidX to a razr maxx and i havent really been able to tell a difference in screen quality. biggest issue i had was the matte finish "anti-glare" screen protectors my office gave me for it. those suckers distort the hell out of the image, and give a bit of a moire effect to it. i may have to junk it and get some crystal ones.

Finally got a hold of the ONE X and it doesn't look any better than the S3, but they both look better than my Gnex.

Sidenote, they need to get JB on both those phones, cause I swear the Gnex on 4.1 is smoother than both of them.

I just can't understand that. The S3 was the first pentile screen I ever got to see in person and it was just so glaringly obvious with the text. It was simply way jaggier than the One X.

I don't understand it either. Biologically, the pentile is impossible to see at 12" assuming 20/20.

Only real explanation is that you're making shit up in your head.

The Bionic I had trained me to see pentile. Had a Rezound, now an s3, and I can clearly see the pentile again after having an lcd for a while. Its not too bad really, but its there to see if you know what to look for. Idk if it drops at 12 inches or what, but i can clearly see it as I'm typing this.
Still a good screen, but its a pentile.
