Pentax *IST DL w/18-55 kit lens @ Circuit City

I went to a store today in Austin, Texas and saw this. It wasn't an open box deal because they had about 4 of them. It's not online, so YMMV. Pretty hot deal though.

If I didn't already have a Rebel XT and an XTi on pre-order, I'd jump on this so quick.

Damn you cannot and your expensive cameras!

XTi on pre-order? The CC store also had them in stock.

I'm willing to wait a couple weeks to pay $85 less than list price, now having to pay tax, and also not having to get off my ass. 😀

I bought this camera online a couple of months ago when Pentax cut the price and offered the rebate. I paid $364 AR delivered. The camera has exceeded my expectations. The only caveat is that you need to shoot in RAW mode to get the best quality.

You need to be aware that Pentax has just released the K100D. You can pick it up for around $600 with the kit lens. It is essentially the same camera as the DL plus it has in-camera image stabilization. Meaning that you don't have to pay extra for IS lens. In my book, it is worth at least an additional $200. Saying that, a DL at around $350 AR (depending on your local sales tax), more than holds it own.

The build quality of these cameras really put the Canon XT to shame...same for the Nikon D50. I cannot recommend this camera high enough. It is a winner.

Went to my local CC, only saw one model there with an "open box value" ticket for over $500, didn't see any boxes in the cabinets there, so I guess it was just the floor model for sale. I would really like to get one of these for a good deal, I'm still on my first digital camera, a 3.2 mp Canon A70. While it's a great camera, I think I'd like to try out what these DSLR's have to offer. It seems that the Pentax has gone back up after its recent price break, though. There's still some time left on the $100 rebate, though.

Went to Wayne NJ store Saturday. Had some in stock but price scanned at $599. After $100 rebate would be $499. Would not budge on price. Manager claims all prices set by CC corporate.

Not sure which Austin store you went to. But all the stores I went to all scanned at $599 - $100 rebate too. No hot deal. Even checked the Round Rock and surrounding stores.

Are you sure about this? They're not supposed to be released until October 20th, according to Amazon.

I played with an XTi at a BestBuy in St. Pete, FL so yes, they are definately out and for sale already. On a side note, they also had a Nikon D80 and i fell in love. Time to upgrade from my D70.

Wow! I'm planning to go down and check out the d80, Xti, and the Sony Alpha tonight. I have a feeling that I will like the D80, which makes me sad because I already have Canon lenses.

b&h sent me an in-stock email today

Yup the XTi is in stock in a lot of CC, I held one last weekend, but I am going with a Nikon D80, just a much better body for me. I have medium sized hands and can only get a few fingers around that tiny body. Plus the ergonomics blow the XTi away. Of course it is $200 more, but you get what you pay for. If you have not tried a Nikon you should or see if you can find a deal on a 20D much better ergonomics and the noise levels look pretty high in the XTi.

The Pentax is also great. The viewfinder is huge and bright, reminds me of a good film camera. I really like the ergonomics and feel of the body. They seem to have a really low noise image and would be sufficient for most uses. They have some really cool lenses and I might consider one as a back up as it will use old manual lenses and this can really save you a lot of money and get you some good glass cheap. You can find a nice used lens for less than $50, amazing! They also have a cool ?fisheye? zoom, something no other mount offers, and there quality glass is not to expensive. So a body for $321 would mean that you could get a pretty complete set up with several lenses and a good flash for just over a grand, HOT deal!

>Plus the ergonomics blow the XTi away.

With the XT, like the XTi you can do almost everything with one hand.

You need two hands for most things on the nikons

How is that better egonomics?

I almost got carpel tunnel from demoing the Rebel XT for 5 minutes.

So, to get back to the subject of this Pentax, is this deal a reality or just a figment of OP's imagination? Can anyone confirm?😕
Thanks!

DEAL DEAD

This deal is colder than Antarctica. Apparently only available at a south Austin store that recently opened. Must be a "grand opening" sale. I know someone who bought a Rebel XTi two weeks ago. Store had them in stock, they were hidden and locked up. The sales associate didn't know it wasn't supposed to be released yet. lol.

The XTi seems to be built just as good as Pentax. I'm not sure why some of you think otherwise. Canon is not going to be outdone by a third-rate camera maker, Pentax. The LCD on the Pentax leaves little to be desired. A lot of menus are cryptic with abbreviated names that make no sense.
