Pentagon says Missle defense test was a hit -- for those that cant read

<< I nearly crapped my pants because at first glance I thought that the title of this thread was "Pentagon says it was hit." >>

I thought that is what it said as well for a sec. I was coming in here to say "no sh!t dick tracy."

Same here, it's amazing how the mind sees what it wants to see.

<< When it can take out 500 ballistic missiles without any warning, I'll support it. >>

How about when it can scramble your eggs and toast your bread?

well, i guess like everyone else, i misread this too, thought it said "was hit", and was going to say, yup, we know, what's new

It is estimated that NK has enough highly enriched uranium to make about 1 nuclear warhead. They really are not a big threat to the US *yet*, but their missile development and sales certainly are..it is funding further development. Someone mentioned 500 inbound nukes, not from NK they wouldnt come. Even china doesn't have nearly that many ICBM's

Wonder if it will stop a 747 flown into a building? Seems as though rogue terrorists might be our biggest problem at the moment, not the "axis of evil" lobbing missles our way.

konichiwa,

We have the tech right now to stop a 747 from hitting a building. We need deployable tech to stop rouge states from lobbing missles. China has the the to land nukes in califonia...and has said they will use it.

what isn't so publicized is that (at least in the previous tests) the incoming target has a homing beacon. The idea of hitting a warhead on its way down is about like hitting a bullet with a bullet, only it's hitting a bullet moving at 5 mi/sec with numerous decoy bullets chillin' alongside.

IMHO only feasible missile defense is boost-phase land-based missiles with the cooperation of Russia.

IMHO again, the countermeasures for ABM are so much cheaper than the cost of ABM, the idea is nonsensical. If anybody cares, robert Jervis' "The Nuclear Revolution" is pretty good on the topic (though a little old and dry now) for explaining the benefits of a MAD world.

Not to be anal, but it's defense, not defence...of course this is coming from somebody who can't read....

Don't the Brits spell it with a C?

Wow, so that's what that cool pattern in the sky was tonight at sunset. It looked like a satellite launch, but the trail just ended in a great big puffy cloud... i guess the missle did its job.

I can't wait til we have this missile defense thing built so we can start dropping nuclear bombs all over the world and not have to worry about getting nuked ourselves.

Supposedly, this missile defense sheild is suppose to stop a couple nukes coming from rouge states. It will not, however, be able to stop however many hundreds or thousands of missles the Russians or Chinese would be able to lob at us.

This test also involved a specific 'homing' signature for the missile to zero in on that substantially improves the likelihood of interception, which incoming enemy missiles will not have. They will continue to have these for several more tests. There will be numberous 'phases' of development for this thing and they want to know how different warheads, engines, and 1000 other factors perform before they move on to another phase.

People seem to forget it?s not just nuclear missiles we need protection from. There are also chemical and biological weapons, which are probably easier to manufacture and use. How hard could it be to strap a couple scuds with biological warheads to an oil tanker? 🙁

Do you have a link or something. I can't find anything. It doesn't make sense to me that they would have decoys and a homing beacon.
