Also, even a little bit of impurities can destroy the thermal conductivity of metal, from my memory. Anyone care to correct me on this?

FishTankX... the impurities thing is right on the money. PURE OFHC (oxygen-free, high conductivity) copper has a thermal conductivity of 400 W/(m K). But copper oxides have VERY low thermal conductivity.... and even copper mixed with trace amounts of other metals (especially highly oxidizing ones) can drop the thermal conductivity to 150~200 W/(m K). At that point, you're not doing much better than aluminum--which is cheap and more easily found.
