Safety Hysteria

BS! is a pretty interesting show in general, but this one was particularly good.

Some interesting facts:

You have a 139 in 6,000,000,000 chance of contracting a variant of Mad Cow disease, and there's no proof it even comes from eating Mad Cow infected Beef.

Kids are 4x more likely to be struck by lightning than to be killed in school.

Your ass is cleaner than your face.

I'd say next to Frontline this is the best investigative reporting show on TV. It just goes to show you how overblown the media/gov't makes the dangers appear to every day people. Fear is an excellent motivator.

Not that I don't take what they say with a grain of salt as well, but they seem to have their facts down and are also having fun with them.

They took a stab at both Ashcroft and Michael Moore both in this episode.

Also, Frontline doesn't show a model getting her ass swabbed very often.:)

It was that there was no proof secondary smoke caused cancer based on the reports cited by the American Lung Cancer Society. Hell, I'm annoyed by smoking like anyone, but facts are facts.

What really blew me away is that there is no link from Mad Cow infected beef to the infection in humans (which you have such a miniscule chance of contracting it's not worth mentioning), something that's never, ever stated on news reports.

I think I'll have a burger for lunch.

So would you eat a burger from a cow known to have mad cow disease?

Tell that to my mom, she has gone absolutely nuts about mad cow disease.

Of course not, but there's no reason to panic about it. To hear it on the news, if you eat Mad Cow infected beef you'ld die immediately.

Did anyone else know that there's no direct link from Mad Cow infected beef to the disease in humans?

Fatal Error - cooking, heat does not destroy the rouge protein that causes that disease.

Penn & Teller are awesome... both on Bullshit! and as magicians. The best part about the show is that they aren't afraid to attack anything. Therefore, is is highly likely that at some time or another, they will attack something that you believe in :)

IIRC, to actually get Mad Cow, you need to eat infected brain and/or nerve tissue. From what I've read, it's not in the muscle meat.

I would probably eat a steak from a Mad Cow cow, but I wouldn't eat a burger from it unless I saw what was actually ground up. ;)

I would take my chances and eat the burger ... just to prove it is safe, or that perhaps i have an amazing immune system, or that sometimes, people make very bad and stupid decisions.
