Penitum Pro OC

I have had CPU-z opened for the last 15 mionutes and the speed of my p4 2.8 keeps changing from 2792.92 to 2791.88 to 2793.83 and so forth but the mulitplier and FSB stay the same only the core speed cahnges? why is this. And i have another question even though it is not related. I have an old pentium pro 180mhz I found a jumper on the mobo and one there are about 10 place to put the connector but one said 180mhz and had the jumper connector on it and one said 200mhz. i moved the jumper to 200mhz and my processor now shows up as a 200mhz. I am not sure if my processor is now running at 200mhz or is the computer just reporting it as 200mhz because i changed the jumper

The computer is more than likely running at 200mhz now. On older pc's thats how you change the multiplier if memory serves me correctly.

so i guess i wont be able to get it above 200mhz. I'll have to try some of the other jumpers , i don't know what they are for because tey are just labeled with numbers and letters some kind of code

use sisoft sandra and run the cpu benches to see if there is aq difference between the 180 and 200 mhz settings. if there is like a 10% difference then it is at 200 mhz.

the cpuz reported speed gives you like 200.0 (45 digits) for the fsb and 2800.0(5 digits) for the cpu. if the fsb cahnges by less than enough to round the 4th digit up or down, then the fsb will stay the same but the 5th digit of the cpu will change

I wish i could oc that pentium pro higher because i have had it running at 200mhz running super pi for almost 24 hours and i touched the heat sink and it is cool. think heatsink didn't have a fan on it so i just layed a case fan on top of it and it was like room temp. anyone know a way to get it to oc more

I believe the changing values you are seeing on the processor rating in CPU-Z are due because no processor is 100% stable.

For example, if your room tempurature increases, it is likely that your processor speed will slightly decrease.

And so, your processor speed is fluctuating between a range of close values.

Ultimately, the clock value of what your CPU is running at in any given moment is not determined by the processor itself, but other ancillary components on the mainboard. This is what permits overclocking in the first place. 🙂

These components have drift and the frequency can and will change ever so slightly. These deviations are normal.

As far as your PPro is concerned, these chips have their multipliers set on the mainboard via jumpers so you can overclock via FSB or ratio or both.

Cheers!

My jumpers only have the options of 180 and 200 mhz. is i take off all jumpers it goes to 133mhz. So are you saying the only way to overclock is via jumpers. My bios has no overclocking option so i geus i might be stuck at 200mhz

my pentium pro ran reliably at 233 for a long long time before it got retired.

the mobo only had instructions for 180 and 200, but if you thought about it a little you could tell how to get to 233. i bet yours is similar.

I've tried Elfenix. I just messed around with it somemore and can't figure out how to get it over 200mhz. Do you remember how you did yours. IF you do i'd apreciate a hint.

If it only has two settings, 180 and 200 I don't know if it's possible.
However, if it gives you FSB and CPU Multipliers, you can have some real fun! 😀

I don't remember the FSB's of PPro's though... 180 = 3x60? 200= 4x50? If there's an option for 4x60 you could get a nice boost! 😀

there was one jumper that controled the bus speed. bus is either 66 or 60. if you're just switching between 180 and 200 then you're moving that one. there should be another jumper there that would let you do, say, 66x3=200 or 66x2.5=166. that jumper controls the multiplier, and you may have a 3.5 or even a 4 available. my 66x3.5=233 was on the other side of 200 from 166.

In the "old days", using jumpers to overclock was pretty much the only way to do it 😉

Your P-pro is overclocked. Try increasing the FSB to 75Mhz, see if there is one more jumper for changing freq. Then you will get a p-pro running at 75*3=225Mhz which the p-pro can take with ease.......
