Penalties for driving with just a learner's license?

I would just like to drive to and from work this summer (20 min mostly on highway each way) but I only have a learner's and can't get the license till at least the end of september. I know my mom got away with it for many years before she got her full license, but the rules are stricter now. So, say I got caught, what would happen? BTW, I live in Quebec, Canada 🙂

But here in the US, we have a permit (learners license) for 6 months. You are allowed to drive with an adult over 25 who has a full license. If you do anything bad, its a suspession, and depending on how bad it is, until your 18. And after the 6 months, you get a restricted licenese. At least i think thats what its called. Basicly its a license that says you cant drive between certian hours, and cant carry passengers under 25...

What state are you in? In Ohio we (now) have to have 50 hours of driving on the temps with a licensed adult driver (ie 18+) and driver's ed, then we get our full license. There's no required time on the temps, you just need to get 50 hours in behind the wheel not counting driver's ed. I think that 16-18 might be restricted between 01:00 and 05:00, but I'm not sure. It's all academic for me since I was grandfathered and I did not have to deal with any of that. My process four years ago was get temps, take driver's ed, get full non-restricted license. Didn't have any required hours for the temps at all. 🙂 As for the penalties, in Ohio it's an automatic suspension of the license until you turn 18. Not at all sure about Canada. Actually in the US is you wait until you're 18, you don't need driver's ed or the 50 hours anymore.

I will say that they never gave me any trouble. I drove with just a learners permit and was pulled over for stopping too far into a stop sign. He asked me how long i have had my license and i told him that i just got it and they have not sent me the real one yet. I got a ticket, paid it and never got in trouble for it. The ticket was expunged from my record on my 18th birthday, too.

Back in '91, I was pulled over at approximately 4:00 in the AM. I had nothing but my learner's permit. This was 4-5 days before my 16th birthday. I had stolen my stepfather's Civic for a joyride while he and my mother slept.

The judge made me pay a $45 dollar fine. No joke, that was it. I guess I got pretty lucky. I eventually paid my stepdad for the tow, since the car was impounded, of course. I wasn't required to wait to get my licence by law, but my parents would not sign for me to get one until I moved out of my mom's house at 17 (a parent must give permission for a minor to get a license here).
 
Iowa gives out a temp license at 16. An accident or moving violation before 18 and you lose driving privaleges till 18.
The learners permit kicks in @ 14 but you must have a licensed adult, 25 or older in the car while driving.
Get busted breaking the rules while driving with a permit and you don't drive till 18.


 
I think you get your licence suspended for three months (also means you have to wait three more months before you can get your probationary lience), the car gets inpounded, the owner of the car gets a huge fine and your insurance will probably double.

I'm not sure though.

States have a policy about provisional instruction permit like: when one is caught driving without an supervisor(whoever that will be) one can't apply until age of eighteen or one year, whichever is longer.

 
How have you been getting along last year with out a car?
Live with the public transportation till you get your license.
Call your local cop shop to find out what is the implication of driving with out a license.

Here in BC the owner of the car is liable for any damage/accident occur by an unauthorized driver. There is a minimal fine for driving with out a fully qualified license. But the fines are accumulative, such as driving with out a qualified supervisor, new driver sign, restricted driving hours, passenger limit, and zero blood alcohol content. The points that you accumulate with normal driving with out an accident can be up to 6 points (driving with out a qualified supervisor & new driver sign), which could be from months of driving prohibit penalties upward to your 19 birthday suspension.

IMHO, you are not responsible/mature enought to hold a driver license if you are planing to break the rule at such an early stage of your driving experience.
 
since you will not have a valid drivers license, you will not be covered by any insurance product.
that means that if you hit anyone, in addition to the criminal charges (driving without a license, etc), you will be personally
libel for any damages and medical expenses. since you probably don't own the car, odds are whoever does (parents?) will be liable for any damages you generate -
so if you get into a real accident - there goes mom and dad's house/saving/etc

think about it.......
 
Don't do it. This is the sort of thing that when you're 25 you look back wondering how the hell you could have thought it was smart to do such a thing 🙂 I know of people who have driven 6 months without a license (lost it to too many points) but they were in their teens and were very lucky. This is stupid because:

1) Get in trouble on the spot including whatever penalties you can get
2) Insurance is obviously void so if you get in an accident you have no insurance. Even if somebody else hits you you'll be in crap.
