I believe it uses a compressed gas to force the ink out. And I'm pretty sure it was developed by a private company for another purpose, using it in space was just a nice bonus.

Dang, beaten to it. It's a funny joke though. 🙂

Obviously it would need to be attached to a small, flat piece of material on the side that contacts the ink. I'm not dumb enough to think that ink is a non-viscous solid.
