Pelosi Made Repeated Requests for Military Aircraft, Documents Show

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly requested military aircraft to shuttle her and her colleagues and family around the country, according to a new report from a conservative watchdog group.

Representatives for Judicial Watch, which obtained e-mails and other documents from a Freedom of Information request, said the correspondence shows Pelosi has abused the system in place to accommodate congressional leaders and treated the Air Force as her "personal airline."

Pelosi's office disputed the claim, pointing to White House policy enacted after the Sept. 11 attacks allowing for the House speaker to travel to his or her congressional district via military aircraft whenever possible for security reasons. Her office said she typically uses the same kind of aircraft used by her predecessor, Dennis Hastert.

But Judicial Watch said that Pelosi was notorious for making special demands for high-end aircraft, lodging last-minute cancellations and racking up additional expenses for the military.

The e-mails showed repeated attempts by Pelosi aides to request aircraft, sometimes aggressively, and by Department of Defense officials to accommodate them.

"I think that's above and beyond what other members of Congress are doing and what is expected of our elected officials," said Jenny Small, a researcher with the group.

In one e-mail, aide Kay King complained to the military that they had not made available any aircraft the House speaker wanted for Memorial Day recess.

"It is my understanding there are NO G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable ... The Speaker will want to know where the planes are," King wrote.

In another, when told a certain type of aircraft would not be available, King wrote: "This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset Speaker."

Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said the report seemed to be based on only "a few e-mails," and defended the requests for military aircraft for her colleagues as a "function of the speaker's office." Elshami said at least one of the requests in the above e-mails referenced requests made for other members.

Pelosi's office noted that the Department of Defense ultimately makes all decisions on use of military aircraft for travel, and that Pelosi is "extraordinarily appreciative" of the department's effort to accommodate Congress.

No wonder Nancy wants another 'stimulus' package. She needs her own jumbo jet. These planes can cost $20k per hour to operate, and have to be prepped and fueled only to see Pelosi cancel her plans.

Change? It's flying over Kansas in style.

Some more emails:

In response to a series of requests for military aircraft, one Defense Department official wrote, "Any chance of politely querying [Pelosi's team] if they really intend to do all of these or are they just picking every weekend?...[T]here's no need to block every weekend 'just in case'..." The email also notes that Pelosi's office had, "a history of canceling many of their past requests."

One DOD official complained about the "hidden costs" associated with the speaker's last minute changes and cancellations. "We have...folks prepping the jets and crews driving in (not a short drive for some), cooking meals and preflighting the jets etc."

The documents include a discussion of House Ethics rules and Defense Department policies as they apply to the speaker's requests for staff, spouses and extended family to accompany her on military aircraft. In May 2008, for example, Pelosi requested that her husband join her on a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) into Iraq. The DOD explained to Pelosi that the agency has a written policy prohibiting spouses from joining CODEL's into combat zones.

Documents obtained from the U.S. Army include correspondence from Speaker Pelosi's office requesting an Army escort and three military planes to transport Pelosi and other members of Congress to Cleveland, Ohio, for the funeral services of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Pelosi noted in her letter of August 22, 2008, that such a request, labeled "Operation Tribute" was an "exception to standard policy."

The documents also detail correspondence from intermediaries for Speaker Pelosi issuing demands for certain aircraft and expressing outrage when requested military planes were not available. "It is my understanding there are no G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable...The speaker will want to know where the planes are..." wrote Kay King, Director of the House Office of Interparliamentary Affairs. In a separate email, when told a certain type of aircraft would not be available, King writes, "This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset peaker."

During another email exchange DOD staff advised Kay King that one Pelosi military aircraft request could not be met because of "crew rest requirements" and offered to help secure commercial travel. Kay King responded: "We appreciate the efforts to help the codel [sic] fly commercially but you know the problem that creates with spouses. If we can find another way to assist with military assets, we would like to do that."

This just in: Nancy Pelosi to hold press conference to berate Automaker CEO's for flying in G5's to DC. Followed by a speech about being the most ethical congress to walk the face of the Earth.

Put her dumbass on a C-130 and be done with it. Dont like? Use your personal wealth to rent a G5 or fly commercial.

"Rep. Nancy Pelosi's predecessor as House speaker, Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL), began flying military planes for official travel in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Air Force has a stable of planes that are used for travel by the speaker, Cabinet members, top generals and for congressional trips to Iraq and other war zones.

Those planes include:

The C-21, the military version of the eight-seater Lear Jet. Its maximum range is 2,306 miles. Each plane cost $3.1 million.

The C-20B, the military version of the 12-seater Gulfstream III. Its maximum range is 4,250 miles. There are five C-20Bs based at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, near Washington, D.C. Each plane cost $29.4 million.

The C-37A, the military version of the 12-seater Gulfstream V. It's able to fly at high altitudes and therefore fly to other continents, with a 6,300-mile range. There are seven C-37As based in the United States, with four at Andrews Air Force Base. Each plane cost $36 million.

The C-40C, the military version of the Boeing 737, is used for Cabinet members and Congress. It has two galleys and a bed. There are two C-40Cs based in Washington D.C., and two at Andrews Air Force Base. Its range is 4,500 to 5,000 miles. It can hold 42 to 111 passengers, based on configuration. Each cost $70 million.

Pelosi has flown back to California once since becoming speaker. She took a commercial flight there, and returned on one of the 12-seaters.

Hastert used all of these planes except the C-40. Since he lived in Illinois, even the smallest plane could take him there without refueling. The smallest plane would not be able to reach California from Washington, and headwinds or other poor weather conditions could require the 12-seaters to stop for refueling.

Navy Cmdr. Jefrey Gordon, a Pentagon spokesman, said Wednesday that Pelosi would be offered "shuttle service for no more than 10 passengers between Washington and San Francisco only based on aircraft availability."

"This does not guarantee nonstop transport," Gordon said.

So in other words since she has to fly from one coast to the other is is more dificult and because the military has been harder on her for the long flight, she has to plan more then the past speaker.

In others words just another Troll thread.

Yeah Judicial Watch, they're awesome and I completely value their opinion that NP is using the Air Force as her personal airline.

I like their other headlines too:

March 10 - Judicial Watch Uncovers Documents Detailing Pelosi's Repeated Requests for Military Travel

March 5 - Judicial Watch Files Civil Rights Lawsuit on Behalf of "Joe the Plumber"

March 4 - Judicial Watch Announces a Press Conference Featuring "Joe the Plumber"

Oh and they also explore the dangers of the HPV vaccine.

Genx - pretty weak with the automaker comparison, NP hasn't run a company into the ground and then come to grovel for taxpayer money, not yet anyways.

She was outraged at the bank CEOs taking a private flight....their lives are probably more at risk than hers is.

Non-weiner Troll link with the Non-biased story.

Cliffs;
She asked for a bigger plane as the one they use will not reach her district without at least 1 full stop to refuel.
Military says they will offer what they have but have had problems.
speaker says they are trying to make it work but there are no rules on this so they are trying to see what they are allowed.
Military now says they will come up with rules to make it easier to plan.

Just another 111 Troll thread.

OMG, she might have to stop and refuel her jet (at the taxpayers expense)? What a hardship!!! How can she possibly function?

LOL. If the Speaker was a Republican, you'd be screaming bloody murder about the liberal generals in the military wasting the speaker's time by not providing a large enough plane to travel around the country with without refueling.

Call me crazy but one would think with all the "national security" emphasis since 9/11 the person 3rd in line to be the president would be using military transport all the time....

What are you talking about? Dennis Hastert had a 12 seater plane; Pelosi came in all high and mighty 2 years ago and wanted a 40 seat plane.

They told her to get lost, but she keeps hassling them.

Hey Moron - Hastert used the 12-seater because it didn't need to refuel between Washington and his home district. He would have complained too if he needed a larger plane to make cross-country trips to his home district all the time.

Yeah, I really don't see the issue here.

The "issue" is cost. Is she really so important that she needs to fly non-stop across the country? It's like a 6 hour trip, so say she has a 90 minute layover to refuel. If she is so important I would venture that she has plenty of things she could (SHOULD) be doing with that 90 minutes and lord only knows the country has better things to do with the taxpayers money.

As Ben Franklin said, a penny saved is a penny earned.

Dude are you kidding!?

I'm taking my argument to the interweb!! That She-Devil has GOT to go!!!

I'm starting an internet petition!! Down with Pelosi!!! raaaaageeeeaaahhhhhh!!

This is certainly not limited to Pelosi, all the leeches on both sides of the isle do this stuff. It just further clarifies how the whole "change" mantra was a simple lie to get elected -- an effective one at that.
