Pelosi First female speaker of the house

ProfJohn

Lifer
Well Nanci Pelosi will be the first female speaker of the house. And will go down in history books because of this achievement.

So how much longer till we are ready for a female President?

BTW: It is a good achievement for Pelosi, but she got the position because members of her party will vote for her, not because the country wants HER to be speaker.
As evident by her disappearing for the past few weeks it almost seems like she didn't want anyone to know who she was. And a VAST majority of America has no clue who she is.
Becoming President will require a female to get America to choose them, not just members of her party.

Talk about backhanded compliments.

Ever heard of a representative democracy?

And your point is...? It doesn't matter what we think. The Speaker is chosen by the majority party in the House. Your trying to downplay it by saying "she got the position because of members of her party will vote for her, not because of the country wants HER to be speaker" just speaks volume to your partisan hackery. Why didn't you say this about all previous Speakers as well?

Yes Democrats won big, good for them, now time to look towards the future instead of talking about failures of the past.
You can run for office on the failures of the past, but you can't run a country on that platform.
Let's see solutions to problems.

You have this crap about the past in your sig and yet you spew 1994 Gingrich

Who are you really?

her209, it was a back handed compliment.

For Pelosi and females in general this is a GREAT achievement. Congrats to her for becoming the first female speaker.

But she did not achieve this by running for and convincing the majority of America that she would be a great speaker. That was my point.

Well typically the speaker is the mean-spirited untrustworthy person there is in the party. The question is whether the Democrats will vote for a Woman.

I think Pelosi has too many things to hide.

She did it within the framework of how one gets the position did she not? But, hey, continue to downplay it. One has to wonder what female(s) did to you to resent them so much that you cannot congratulate her on the accomplishment.

This is actually not entirely true. The speaker is chosen by the entire house, it's just that the majority party usually bands together and gets one of their own in there by outvoting the minority. It is also possible to elect any member of the house to be speaker, again, it just usually happens that the speaker is a member of the majority party.

I did congratulate her, I even created this thread and mentioned her.
It is a great achomplishment. She did something Gephart could not do in 5 tries, win the house for Democrats. YaY Nanci!!!!

Condi Rice wasn't elected either, why haven't you been insulting her?
I don't think I "insulted" Nanci.

And as for Condi, I pointed out that the most powerful blacks (Powel and Condi) in American history were both Republican appointees.

And up until Nanci takes over, the most powerful female in the history of our country was a black female appointed by a Republican.

Technically you are correct. I was thinking of the majority House leader.

Majority and Minority House Leader

Speaker of the House

You do realize, probably not, that ALL Speakers of the House where elected to that position because that is what a majority of the members of the House wanted.

How about this for a ticket - Hillary and Condi...imagine the middle east having to deal with a woman president, vice president and speaker of the house.

I would have said sooner but Pelosi will probably set it back 50 years.

So does that mean Republicans won't get it back until 2046?😉

Anyways, this is a pretty stupid thread. It could have been good, but it had a lot of stupidity injected into it. When has a Speaker of the House gotten in because a majority of Americans wanted that person?

Other than those who are thoroughly into politics, and even then I question it, I have little doubt that whoever the Speaker is will affect anyone's vote.

To get back on topic, sure, a woman will be elected within our lifetimes. It's only a matter of getting a decent candidate to run. It's the same as getting someone who isn't white. You just need a good candidate.

A female president could be a good thing. A lot of times women have the capacity to be more tactful and "political" than men. Yes I know that is generalising, and how it translates to actual politics I don't know. I still think it would be good to have a President who is not a white male though, maybe even one who isn't like 50 or something. It might shake things up, who knows.

I have no idea when it will happen though. That is sort of hard to predict.

I don't think we're culturally ready for a female President, and the recent resurgence of conservative "family values" really seals the deal. Sure, women are making great strides in leadership in government, but there is a BIG difference between being a member of the cabinet under a male President and being the Boss. Mostly the difference is that the chief executive has to have a strong presence, and a lot of people seem to find strong women threatening. And I'm not just talking about politics, in traditionally male dominated fields like science and engineering, not only are women an extreme minority, but you'll have to look pretty hard to find ANY of them that ACT like scientists and engineers, openly proud of their intelligence and brains...mostly because their male peers seem to find this extremely threatening. The old wisdom that the fastest way to become a "bitch" if you are a women in politics is to act like your male peers is still valid today.

Personally I think this is one of the more pathetic aspects of our culture, but you'd have to be living in a cave not to realize that it still has power over people. That being said, I think the WOMEN in this country are more than ready for a female President...but I suspect the men won't be getting on board for a while yet. Personally I like the idea of a female President, but I also like the idea of women in science and engineering...and I often find I'm in the extreme minority there too.

Considering the Speaker has nothing but ceremonial powers (excepting Presidential succession), I see no reason why the American people should care about who, specifically, is the speaker of the house.

Neither did Dennis Hastert or Newt Gingrich.
