* For the Red Sox, the big point here is that they bought at least two or Pedroia's free agent years for $10 million per. If the club exercises the option, they will effectively have signed Pedroia to a three-year deal (beyond 2012, when he is eligible for free agency) worth $31 million. Pedroia's gain is that he obviously guarantees himself a good deal of money now and gains a great measure of long-term security.

It's pretty standard for those years of his career. Look at guys like Hanley Ramirez, who basically signed away the same years for $48 or $50 million.

IMO, it's a smart move on both sides. Pedroia clearly likes playing in Boston and Boston has locked him up through his prime.

Not only that, but the less money that a star demands leaves more room in play to pick up other stars. The Yankees are about the only team that seems to have no price ceiling. This is especially a problem in sports with salary caps. Players that demand more and more money are just fucking their own teams in the long run.

They're several years away from free agency, so neither one can command a mega contract right now. They aren't cutting their teams *that* big of a deal.

Pedroia did commit to staying in Boston for a long time and avoiding yearly arbitration battles, which is a nice gesture, and the fans should be happy with that. But he's going to be well paid while doing it (i.e. he's not leaving tens of millions on the table here).
