Pedants and grammar nazis are idiots who don't know anything about language.

Think I'm wrong? Stephen Fry begs to differ: http://youtu.be/J7E-aoXLZGY
If you think you know more about the English language than Fry you are a moran.

Language is not a collection of rules that were written down a long time ago. Languages are evolving and changing things. If you dumb, dumb prescriptivists were right, French, Spanish, Italian, and Romanian would still be Latin!!!

Take a Linguistics class and shut the fuck up: http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=2270 (torrents? :whiste:)

I'm so glad, I came in here to post the Stephen Fry stuff, he's amazing and so right, after reading his thoughts on language I've completely changed my view on it. It's a beautiful fluid thing

What a maroon. There's a difference between a language evolving and, obfuscation or, just being plain fucking lazy.

No there isn't. Language changes by people being "lazy" or just using language as it feels comfortable to them. Prime example: Lol has been added to the dictionary.

The difference is language versus whatever the hell it is we speak online. They are not the same no matter how many FaceBook whinerbee's (like it? I just created it.) want to add their favorite new word to the dictionary.

The internet is the modern medium through which new language is being created most quickly. Ultimately language evolves through whatever medium of the time is being used. You'd have been one of those people who thought Shakespeare was an idiot because he made up words.

Shens.
I don't believe in the evolution of language. Only the evolution of letters is possible.

Shakespeare WAS an idiot...but not because he made up words...Have you ever read the drivel he wrote?

I have, I studied it at school as all English students do, and I've seen at least 10 performances of his plays, The man was a genius.

I bet he was just a guy trying to write soap-opera-level stories so that he could make rent payments. :D

The difference is, with education, our grandchildren will still be able to understand Shakespeare but, paging through gramp's ATOT posts will leave them completely dumbfounded.

Will it though? If language evolves along these lines then it may well make even more sense to them than it does to me! (I find all this internet crap confusing)

LOL!

This post is perfectly stupid. People "just being plain fucking lazy" about language is precisely how languages evolve. If there is a quicker, easier way to communicate the same thing it will naturally replace the more complicated usage.

I think the way that English has evolved in America is proof of this!

Most people don't understand Shakespeare. Many, many words used by the Bard have completely different definitions. Most people who haven't studied him think that "wherefore art thou Romeo" is a spatial question.

The only things I get grammar Nazi-ish about are mistakes which demonstrate a lack of understanding, and especially mistakes which make the intent of the statement ambiguous.

This is correct in principle but, in practice, the FaceBook whinerbees believe their updates and forum posts to be the world. This has already led to confusion by many over web speak and only creates obstacles in communicating. I'm all for evolution but, adding new words and changing meanings of old ones in the space of a few months will only further confuse people. Oh and, I'm not perfect just, damn good.

Despite all that, including the "STFU" part, it still doesn't relieve a writer from the proper use of their, there, or they're, or the proper use of its vs. it's.

While language evolves, ignorance of proper spelling is no excuse, no matter what anyone thinks or says.

There is no such thing as proper language, hopefully their they're and there will merge into one ultimately. I've noticed the evolution of language more on this forum than anyone, a combination of the differences between English and American language and Internet language, it's evident that language becomes more simple as it evolves. The transition between English and American is evidence enough of that.
