I've never understood how the hell anyone could eat those nasty, cold, soggy things...Gimme roasted in the shell, heavily salted, please.

They are usually warm in a crock pot down here, but I've never been a fan myself.

I get them every so often. They come canned here from a southern food packer(Margaret Holmes maybe?). I nuke them in the microwave. They are messy, and I'm not sure it's an improvement over roasted peanuts, but I still get them.

It's true and I have always wondered why. Is it just a mental thing because they are slightly more work so you feel like they should taste better?

in the South (western NC, anyway), buying boiled peanuts on the side of the road means you are actually buying moonshine from said vendor. People don't mind the shitty peanuts, because they are more interested in the hooch.

Can confirm and I always kinda wondered why too, maybe the shell itself has some flavours that "leech" into the peanuts as they are in contact for longer? Or maybe it is just psychological.

Only downside of peanuts in shell is that it's a bit more messy. Was eating some a while ago and I have bits of shell that flew all over the place lol. Need to vacuum. I usually only buy shelled peanuts for the chipmunks or squirrels but every now and then for myself too. Don't really see any chipmunks or squirrels much anymore.

I always assumed it was because you had to pace yourself and only eat a couple at a time. Versus eating a handful very quickly.
