My sister just got an HP Ipaq rx3115 with Windows Mobile PPC 2003 SE for work. I'm searching for good applications for it, but I'm not familiar with PDA software/OS and I'm getting confused. I see software that's for "Pocket PC", but then says it's not compatible with PPC 2002. Or, I see them indicate PPC 2000, and specify ARM, MIPS and SH3 (http://www.cs.utah.edu/~midgley/wince/vnc.html). Then there is software labelled PPC, but indicate WinCE (http://www.aol.co.uk/aim/wince/index.html).

So, what's compatible and what's not? If I got PPC2002 apps, will it run on PPC2003? Will WinCE apps? And the rx3115 has a Samsung S3C 2440 300mhz processor... is that an ARM processor?

Also, is the OS upgradable? I used to use a Handspring Visor Deluxe. I don't use it anymore because it quickly became obsolete with its non-upgradable PalmOS 3 (?).

And rather than start another thread on another forum, do you know of any good software? I noticed AIM costs money thru aim.com, but is free thru aim.co.uk sites.

pocket pc 2002 apps will generally run on pocket pc 2003. that aim application will run fine on pocket pc 2003, though many CE apps don't deal with the screen dimensions of pocket pcs well. you want the version that targets ARM processors. the OS is only upgradeable if the manufacturer (HP) releases an update. microsoft lets the manufacturers deal with it.
