Hm, we don't have a PDA forum so I'm just gonna post in general..

I'm like the last guy who doesn't have one of these guys.. I'm looking at the Handspring Visor Deluxe... being that it's kinda ugly and I think bulky but I like the options..

Visor Deluxe
Visor 33.6K Modem - 129
Visor Cell Phone - 299 - Are they nuts !?!?

Then I went Xircom
Xircom 56k Modem - 149
Xircom Wireless Modem - Winter 01
Xircom Wireless LAN - Winter 01
Xircom Wired Lan - Winter 01

There is also Omnisky 299 Wireless modem w/39.99 month..
200 Rebate after 6 Month...

I like the visor a lot, I'll probably make my sister throw out her palm since the visor has 8mbs...

I'm pretty sure the visor runs all palm application ? is there an exception ?

I also have a $50 off for the Visor Deluxe bringing it to 200 even..
This isn't a bad PDA right ? I don't have that much experience except with Palms (support them in Outlook).

I been using Pocket Mirror to sync between outlook & the palms, think this still works ?

The Visor series is the twin sister to the Palm, they run the same apps-according to the OS version you have.

NEVER throw out a Palm regardless of the small memory, there is SOMEBODY that could use it. They are just too handy(regardless of memory size).

I'm a value american express blue for business user... spend avg 2-3k month.. for that they give you a lousy $50 off coupon. I figure I use the staples coupon 20 or 40 off 200 and apply this 50 off coupon..

I've got a Visor Deluxe. It's my first Palm device after my Compaq HPC (Windows CE 1.0) died. I love it. Yes, it's a little bigger that the Palm's, but I like the expandibility concept. Who knows if I'll ever use it.

It comes with a slip on leather cover which add's virtually nothing to the overall dimensions of the device. I like it because it fits in my pocket with the cover. It also gives a godly amount of protection. For all you nerd heads out there it kind reminds me of the old TI calculator cases. (Without the zipper).

If your going to buy one, buy from a retailer, don't even think about ordering directly from Handspring. I ordered mine online and oh boy the lies I was told! I was on the phone with them virtually every day after about 10 days and it still took another 10 days to get it shipped. Buy from CompUSA or other retailer. The price is the same and you won't wait 3 weeks to get it after being told they were shipping from stock!

I have a friend with one, and I asking for one for Christmas. The thing is so cool, and I really don't see hwo it is bulky. It is just as big as a wallet or so. (well, a little bigger, but close enough), but definitely smaller than a TI-89. The visor's features are awesome. It even has a little infrared thing that can turn on tvs and do other things. Also, the pen it comes with is so nifty because it has a screw off tip and there is a screw driver under the tip.

The one to get as of today is the Visor Platinum. It is $50 more, but it uses OS 3.5H, and it's 50% faster. Software is not 100% compatible but almost so, for the up to date stuff. (Ie. If you get common software, it works 100% fine. Some of the weird older stuff or esoteric stuff requires an update though.) The Visor Deluxe is also good (what I own) but it uses the older OS 3.1H. In truth it's fine, but the only problem is that the IR support for infrared communications with laptops/IR phones requires additional software. IR support for beaming to/from other Palms is fine though. (Makes no difference for most people since people don't use IR communications, but it saves on buying a modem, if your digital phone supports IR transmission and has a built in modem - many do.)

The other option is the Palm IIIxe, but there's no Springboard slot obviously.

I have some info in my FAQ about the various models, but I haven't yet updated it to include the Visor Platinum.

I would also strongly suggest getting a backup module at the same time, although if you are always close to your computer it may be unnecessary if you run Backup Buddy software. I like having the backup module because sometimes I go away for a few days without a laptop and I like knowing I have a backup with me.

The coolest accessory to get (which I also have :)) is the Stowaway Keyboard. It roolz! ;)

P.S. There should be no problem with online purchasing now, but since it's everywhere, there isn't any point in paying for shipping.

I overclock my visor deluxe to 28MHz.

Platinums are clocked at 33Mhz, but I hear they can reach 40+

Thanx-a-lot. You've provided too much information about afterburner. Found it outstandingly useless.

Afterburner is a simple program that lets you overclock on an app by app basis. SO for small apps like address book you can actually underclock it to save battery power, and for large apps like avantgo you can overclock it. Aside from the increased battery usage, I havent had any problems. And I think its just sad that a 28 mhz processor can format a wepage far far faster than a 206mhz ipaq can...

I was gonna keep my mouth shut...but where the hell did you get THAT from? That is just so WHACK that it pisses me off.

It's like comparing apples to oranges. I don't see the Palm formating full size web pages then shrinking them down to the screen. All the Palm does is web clipping. Not to mention that the iPAQ does full JAVA support and true color images, while the Palm only has to deal with green stuff. The browser used on the iPAQ is IE 5.0, I know that the Palm browser is no where as feature-filled or robust.

Either way, you level the playing fields and let the iPaq run stuff in monochrome green colors and a featureless browser and see who goes crying home to mama!

Hell even without level playing fields the iPAQ would win.

You bring your Palm, and I'll bring my iPAQ. We'll line up on the track and we'll see who gets a face full of hot, chunked rubber :)

Yeah. NFS4 is right. (Did I say that??? ;)) Although I don't do web on these things, my understanding is that handling of pages is COMPLETELY different. The iPAQ tries to be a laptop in a sense, and the Palm OS machines don't even attempt it. Now the question arises whether you want to pay for the pseudo-laptop features. NFS4 does of course, but most of us don't.

The Palm does less, but it does it well and fast. The PocketPC can do more, but sometimes the software is limited, it costs quite a bit more, and it can run slower because sometimes it bites off more than it can chew.

It really depends on how much you're willing to spend and what you want/need.
