I want a PDA that can be mounted in the car and used as a GPS navigation system.

PDA features
- calendar features (date planning, scheduling, sync with outlook)
- view word, excel, PDF documents (slight editing?)
- wifi b/g
- web browser

GPS features
- up to date maps (reasonably)
- tells you when you reach your destination (aka doesnt say "your destination is in 300meters" does say "your destination is in 300 meters on the right....you have arrived at your destination")

I do not want an iPhone. I have a phone and its through verizon. I have no intention of changing carriers (just moved to verizon 1 month ago)

If this device exists would someone PLEASE let me know because I am having a hell of a time finding it.

Thanks

The only smartphone that comes close to do all that on Verizon is the brand new Blackberry Pearl 8130. There's a thread on it further down in the forum.

Review:

But the Pearl 8130 can't do Word files.

Another suggestion is a Treo 700wx - and then buy the wifi card and the GPS card for it, and swap attachment cards as need.

I don't know why everyone keeps suggesting phones, I got the impression he liked his phone and wants to keep it separate from his navigation/PDA device.

HP iPAQ rx5915 would be a good choice, they're ~$350 now. WM5, 2GB memory, SDIO slot, WiFi, BT, builtin GPS, antiglare screen, huge battery, TomTom navigation software preloaded.

You could also roll your own by buying any WM5 or WM6 handheld and a BT GPS & nav software such as iGuidance or TomTom.

You cannot *edit* word files but you can read them.

I have an iPaq with a custom OEM cradle which has a GPS receiver, a power point and a speaker/amplifier. It looks neat and fits the device like it was made by HP. This with Tom Tom was what I used for 18 months before I got a car with built in nav.

I've never sold it and now they're worth nothing. ah heck.

Good to know. Thanks. That 8130 sounds better every time I read more about it.

As far as why we are suggesting phones... at least in my case, it's because I think it's really easy to find a PDA with a GPS. Most of them support it with add-on cards, and a lot of the newer ones have GPS's built in, up front. Since the OP mentioned that it was hard to find, and that he didn't want to switch from Verizon, I assumed that when he/she said "PDA", he/she must mean "smartphone".

As I've said in other threads, ask me anything about Pearl 2, I have the 8120 EDGE/WiFi version.

verizon should have a version of the mogul (6800) available soon. If you can still switch phones that along with a bluetooth gps and iguidance might be your best option.

8130 is real GPS. I guess with the Garmin SW you'd be looking at a great solution.
