"PCs are good for anything, just not games"

Epic really needs to make up their minds. It seems almost every couple of weeks, someone from epic is coming out with a different opinion on PC games :disgust:

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/36390/118/

But at the end of the day, consoles have definitely left PC games behind.

PC gaming is in a weird position right now. Now, 60% of PCs on the market don't have a workable graphics processor at all. All the Intel integrated graphics are still incapable of running any modern games. So you really have to buy a PC knowing that you're going to play games in order to avoid being stuck with integrated graphics. This is unfortunate, and this is one of main reasons behind the decline of the PC as a gaming platform. That really has endangered high-end PC game sales. In the past, if you bought a game, it would at least work. It might not have been a great experience, but it would always work.

lol, here we go again.

Reading the interview, I get the vibe that Sweeney is more pissed about the fact that PCs could be *great* gaming platforms if decent GPUs (8600 GTS or higher) were the minimum standard. He doesn't seem angry at the PC so much as angry at Intel for shipping their shitty little integrated graphics chips that have enough trouble running 2d apps, let alone 3d.

As a company, I definitely get the impression they're shifting their emphasis away from the PC for the time being, whatever the reason may be. I doubt this'll change much for them in the long run though - engine licensing has been their bread and butter for about a decade or so anyway, and it's doing better than ever.

don't most pcs (even with integrated graphics) still have a slot that can be used for a separate video card? so you're not really stuck.

Yes they do, but what happens with the family that buys a $400 budget dell because they are on a budget? I doubt they can pour $200 more into a dedicated gaming card. On top of that, low end PCs tend to have questionable processors and memory, albeit, again, upgradable.

Plus, not to mention dealing with all the drivers, bugs and DRM shit.

Heck, the most important point is whether there are enough people who even care to play UT3 in the first place.

At least he isn't blindly blaming pirates like the COD developers.

So if he's right and Intels intergrated graphics is a big culprit what can he do to fix it? Make a great game that will make people buy the hardware to play it. Isn't that how it went in the past? When someone wanted to play Doom or Quake they needed a 3DFX card (or whatever model graphics card at the time) and they went out and bought it. I recall upgrading because the original Unreal was so awesome I hadto play it.

The problem is cookie cutter gameplay with prettier graphics. We are looking for the next greatest thing. Not something we've seen a hundred times over.

i was just commenting on the ability to upgrade, not your financial position. is a family use budget PC going to be used to play high end games anyway? highly doubt it.

He's just being an emo because their game didn't sell well enough. Other games are doing fine!

Most of the propaganda they are disseminating, is just an obvious effort to justify their decision to focus on consoles. I would have advised all of them to stick to a canned response, one stating that it is purely a business decision, the pursuit of/maximizing of, profits. Capitalism and avarice, PC gamers can understand and except, but the finger pointing and finger wagging at us, well, they are just trying to use PC gamers as the scape goat. *Schhhhick!* Is this your knife in my back, Epic? ;)

I don't like a lot of Epic's recent games but I really don't want to see them become a console developer solely either... ugh...

QFMFT

If UT3 wasn't such trash then maybe it would have sold better.

The problem with the PC gaming market is that there aren't enough good games made that call for me whipping out my credit card.

I buy maybe 3 games a year, and I'd be happy to double that if they'd make more games that are worth the money. I'm always waiting for some game to come out.

Exactly. There are so few high caliber games anymore it's ridiculous. Valve games and Blizzard games are all that excite me anymore. Everything else is a "wait and see."

Yeah, I mean, they may be able to profit by releasing one game every four years, like GTA or the HL series, hell, Far Cry and then Crysis, but the rest of the time, most of us are left bored.

Speaking of crying for bad sales, Gamespy's online statistics show that there are more people playing the Halo: Combat Evolved DEMO than there are playing UT3.

I think consoles can be fun, but not for first person shooters. I guess Epic thought of that with keyboard and mouse support for the PS3 version of UT3, but until kb/m support becomes standard for console shooters, I won't be buying any console FPSs. FPS games are fun, but they're only good on PC (IMO, of course).

I agree with you. I actually play shooters almost exclusively. I think even GTA is best with a m/k. I don't own a console, so I wait for games like GTA to make it to the PC.

That's like saying automobiles are not good for NASCAR racing, because few cars are equipped for it.

You're missing out. I had a blast with The Darkness which is console only for some reason. As long as I'm having fun, I no longer care if I use a controller or KB/mouse.

pffft UT3 sucked. I played the demo, full version and the PS3 version on the PS3 with a mouse KB. Every time I tried it I didn't like it.

My Unreal series breakdown:

Games I bought:
Unreal
Unreal Return to Na-Pali expansion pack
Unreal Tournament
Unreal 2
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2004

Games I played demos of:
UT3

Games I pirated:

IMO UT3 was so bad it wasn't even worth pirating.
Blame your game first, then blame pirates.
Hell, blame CoD4 and Crysis before you blame pirates.

I personally can't have fun in an FPS using a controller. I tried it a few times and had trouble just moving around. It feels like trying to play an RTS with a racing wheel. I've been using a mouse/KB for far too long to get used to it. :p

they are a bunch of CRYBABIES ... :p
