PCMCIA Help!

I recently purchased a PCMCIA smart media reader card for my presario 1273 notebook. The computer will not recognize the card. The control panel shows the PCMCIA icon. The device manager has the PCMCIA installed with no conflicts. I don't have another card to try, so I'm not sure if it's my computer or the new card. I'm told that when you insert the card, it's supposed to "beep", but it doesn't do that. It doesn't show in "my computer" as another drive either.. Is there any special drivers that need to be installed for the PCMCIA?
I'm running windows 98, 96meg ram....
Any help is appreciated
Thanks..
