I'm looking into possibly using my laptop to connect to a projector to play a movie because I can use the VGA port for better quality than the S-Video port on my DVD player. (Projector doesn't support anything else).

Anyway, if I use the DVD player, I can hook it to my receiver and have digital audio for surround sound and such. If I use the laptop, I can get better video but would just have the headphone jack to go audio out to my receiver with just the red/white rca ports so I'd lose the surround sound and such.

So, do they make any sort of PCMCIA card that would have a digital audio out that I could play the DVD in the laptop, have the VGA going to the projector and this digital audio then to the tuner for the best of both worlds?

I wasn't able to find anything so I'm not sure if they really exist or not or if it's only in the hundreds of dollars range.

Thanks.

If the laptop has USB 2.0 (instead of 1.x) you can buy USB soundcards with digital out for around $50 at newegg.com. I haven't used any of them. CHeck user reviews and /or google for comments/reviews.

There have been PCMCIA soundcards including Sound Blasters, I don't know which ones had digital.
