PCMCIA card not detected in Win98

Under Windows 98SE, when I insert my Linksys 56k & 10/100 PCMCIA card, the installation screen does not come up so that I can install the card's drivers. However, the card was working fine under Win2k.

Linksys suggests I go into the registry and remove a specific entry, but I have no such entry. I tried "Add Hardware" in the Control Panel to install the drivers. While it does appear that it installs the driver software, the device does not show up in System -> Hardware. The hardware screen shows no problems with any other devices in the system.

Any ideas?

Can you see ANY PCMCIA cards in win98? If not:

I once had to go to a regional office of a well-known electronics company to work on a laptop running Japanese Win98 for this problem. No, I don't know Japanese...and the owner of the laptop didn't know english, which made it REAL interesting reading the error messages off his pocket translator. (loose translations and computers don't mix) To make a long story short, it ended up being related to duplicate LPT1: drivers that only showed up in safe mode. After I removed ALL of them, rebooted, and let win98 reinstall a single LPT1, PCMCIA cards were recognized again - and I had a VERY happy customer because his win98 CDs were left in Japan.

This is not the only time I have found "ghost" drivers (as I call them) to cause seemingly unrelated problems with 98 boxes. Something you might want to check... they are only visible in safe mode and do not have explanation marks or conflicts, win98 is otherwise happy in your misery.

Well, I looked around in Safe mode, but I did not find any duplicate or problem drives.

Can I see any PCMCIA card? This is the only one I have. The PC Card Status icon in my system tray responds when I plug it in or take it out. It shows up as "Socket", not by its device name (Linksys Etherfast blabla...).

Ugh. This thing just does not want to install.

I think on that jap laptop, I would get no response at all when inserting a card. But then it has been a while too.

Maybe its time to call/email linksys again with more details... Good luck
