PCIe 1x

I was wondering, what can I put in those new pci-express slots on motherboards?

You know, the little slots on the right of the PCI-Express 16x?

I was looking for a firewire add-on card

Not very much yet, it could be a while 'till they make cards for them. They probably will make sound cards, lan cards, ide/sata cards, etc, eventaully.

Your link is broken.

I think SCSI, raid, and network cards are coming out in PCIe format. Not positive though.

Why network cards? Integrated is always faster.

First, I was probably a bit mistaken. I'm not sure if NICs will be made for the 1x ports (or any of the other stuff 😱).

Second, integrated is not always faster. Half of the integrated NICs out there are realtek crap, the other half are still sitting on the PCI bus. Replacing those crap NICs with quality cards (intel, syskonnect) is a good idea, if you care about performance.

The only x1 PCI-E cards avi. atm are Gigabit Ethernet cards, the only other cards in the PCI-E formfactor that you can buy now are x8 SATA and SCSI raid cards that are horribly expensive.

Don't most integrated network cards use PCI and not PCIe?

Unlike the bandwidth challenged PCI based controllers seen on some of the other boards. The 88E8053 makes use of the PCI Express bus.

If this is true would an integrated PCI network controller be faster than a PCIe network addon card in a 1x PCIe slot?
