PCI video card with vertex and pixel shading?

I built a new C2D system and gave the HP to the wife and kids to retire
the 10 year old Pentum 2 -266Mhz they were using. (painfully slow running Windows 2000)

I told my wife that the HP will run the new games, etc. WRONG! :frown:

I went to install Legos Star Wars I it would not install because the graphics
do not support vertex and pixel shading. (required by the game)
The HP a1120n has onboard graphics and does not have a AGP or PCI Express.

So I need a reasonably priced PCI video card
to put in it that supports pixel and vertex shading.

Any suggestions?

Do not expect much from any video card crippled by a plain PCI bus. Any game with a lot of animation is likely to really bog down because PCI is so very excruciatingly slow. Saying that an X1300 is "best" is not saying much, either. It's already a very slow GPU when it is using a normal video bus.

I am not expecting much.
My boy is 5 years old so my current needs are not that great.

At $109 the xt1300 PCI card is a little more than I want to spend on old technology.

CompUSA has a nVideo GeForce FX5200 PCI card for $59.99 or
a Radeon 9250 PCI card for $59.99.
I may try one of them.

Thoughts?

The Radeon 9250 is not a Dx9 card. Maybe try the 6200 PCI? The 5200 is so slow that it might as well be a 2d-only card. It's not going to handle any Dx9 games well.

the fx5200 is a definate no.
I'd steer away from the 9250 also.

the PCI 6200 is the lowest you want to go. If you can afford it, the x1300 would be your best bet

You gotta be kidding.

Im pretty sure that the P2 was the computer that they were using before he gave them the new one that doesnt have a video card that supports pixel shaders.

My bad, the other machine is apparently Pentium 4.

Hahaha. No I don't.
I paid two grand for that machine in 1995. It was fast then. Still runs.
But it will end up on the trash heap.

I'm going to shop a bit for a 6200 or xt300 for a lower price. If I can find one for around $60 I'll go with it. Ebay here I come.
Otherwise I may wait and go with a new MB, CPU and memory to put in the HP case.

I appreciate the input on the other cards.

By anychance were you in the bellevue circuit city last night ? I heard a guy asking one of the salesman the same question. If so :) pcrecycle down the road should have some cheap 6200 and x1300's.
