Hi!

I just bought a USB 3.0 pci express card
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-Ex.../dp/B003MVJG8Q
and have fitted it in my pc, all apart from one tiny thing. The power supply. (which I did not expect tbh).

It requires a 4 pin power connector
http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#peripheral
but I don't have a spare one. I do however have a 6 pin pci express power connector free:
http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#pciexpress

Anyone know of a good cheap place to get an adapter to go FROM PCI express TO molex 4 pin? I can find lots going from 2x4 pins to the 6 pin PCI but not the other way around (cause why would you want to!).

Any thoughts would be very gratefully recieved!

Hi there,

Good idea, however my PC doesn't have any of those connectors..... (at least as far as I can see - they might be hidden within the power unit but none of the other drives etc. use one).

Damn, that's odd as heck. Bet it's a prebuilt computer if I had to guess.

As far as using the PCI-e connector, the problem I can foresee is the PCI-e only supplies +12V while a Molex connector gives access to +12V and +5V, and unless you're absolutely sure your card uses nothing but +12V, you could potentially fry your card unintentionally.

Hi

I could not spot one. The harddrives and DVD drive use a SATA plug http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#sata and the motherboard has a mother of a plug on it
http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atxmain20

There are also some little (1cm wide, 3mm high) white plugs (I would guess http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#floppy) and the firewire card has a different power plug on it but I cannot spot a 4pin anywhere.... could one be hiding within the PSU housing?

I've taken some photos but I'm not allowed to attach them, do I need to tweak my membership or something?

It is a prebuilt computer I'm afraid, I can tinker but I've not built my own... yet. Is a Dell (don't hate me!) Inspiron 530.

Hi,

Cool thanks for that, looks like I could finally get some 3.0 speed :-D

Took some pics so might as well upload them
Here is the spare SATA plug (on the left hand side)

Here is the PCI Express

This one has a much longer cable.

Am a little concerned the SATA-MOLEX cable won't reach, is a shame it doesn't give the length of cable, though if there are three molexs in series (rather than the two shown) then third might reach!
