PCI Express for Socket A?

I was under the impression that the only motherboards that used PCI Express were for Intel processors.

Now I might be confused since I have not been keeping up to date on socket A developments over the past year since I was looking to upgrade to the A64 (which I have now done) and that platform did not support PCI Express until very recently with the ATI Xpress 200.

Via, nVidia, ATI and SIS have PCI Express chipsets for the A64 platform. The nforce 4 chipset appears to be the easiest to find at vendors right now. I don't think there will be a solution for the socket A (Athlon XP) platform.

Ok, because one of my friends would be able to get a good deal on a system advertised as having an MSI motherboard w/ PCI Express, Athlon XP 2600+, 1.5GBs of RAM, etc. I didn't remember hearing about any socket A mobos with PCI Express support.

To get PCI Express on Socket-A mobo, you would have to have a new chipset and I haven't heard of any new Socket-A chipsets. Nor have I heard of any Socket-A mobo that has achieved PCI Express in any other way. LMK if you really know of any.

Athlon XP board with PCI-X is unlikely too. Possibly an MP board, but I doubt there would be a special on those, as they're esoteric.

There are no SocketA PCI-E boards. Maybe there will be in the future, but I highly doubt it. If I'm wrong and there is such a thing, it would likely be some rare mobo made specifically for an OEM Systems maker. I think your friend may have mistook an Athon 64 with an Athlon XP, or maybe the Seller has made an error in heir advertisement.

There are 2 reasons it cannot be an Athlon 64:

-it is a 2600+, the slowest A64 is 2800+
-the system is around a year old so it would not have PCI Express

Aren't there Sempron's on the Socket A? I wouldn't say 'dead' necessarily. Last I looked, you can still buy them anywhere. the Athlon XP 3200+ is still a great performer for budget systems.

The socket A is definitely a good buy for someone looking for a budget PC with decent performance, especially in my friend's case where he will be trading it for a used PS2 🙂

a socket 754 Sempron is batter value IMHO

I think an Athlon 64 2800+ is the best deal available for socket 754. I bought mine a few months ago when there was a slight premium over the Sempron 3100+. Today it is actually cheaper to get the 2800+ plus you get the advantage of being able to run Windows XP64.

There is some advantage in running Linux 64 but I can't see any advantage in running Windwoes of any variety... 😉

nothng for socket A is still in production, even including the semprons. all semprons are now transitioning to 754 and 939 later this yr. its a dead socket, but the fact that its still on shelves retail give it a little more life.

I just bought a KW7 w/ KT880 chipset, a very recent product and got a Sempron 2400+ to go with. More than adequate for normal human beings...
