Pci Express 2.1 card in v 1.0 motherboard

I just ordered PowerColor Radeon HD 5550 GPU, which is PCI Express 2.1 . I have a MSI K9VGM-V PCI Express 1.0 MB.

The google seach indicated that the card is backward compatible with v 1.0 MB. However, I will appreciate any feedback from this forum, personal experience of running v2.1 card in v1.0 MB.

Ultimately, I will upgrade my motherboard. Question is will this work at all now?

it should work fine, that card does not even come close to needing the bandwidth of PCIe 2.x

even a 5870 under PCIE 1.0x16 is not maxed out... only a 5970 bottlenecks at PCIE 1.0x16

Thanks for the replies. I sincerely appreciate. I was worried about compability, not performance. At least for now, I will not have to change the motherboard.

I bought this card for playing and editing blue ray video. Based on a program that checks system requirement for blue ray play, I found that my Athlon 64 X2 5200+ CPU was OK, but my ATI X1050 GPU failed the test. Hence the order for new GPU.

Is the Radeon HD 5550 card good enough for that purpose. If not, I can return it unopened and get the right one. If so, how much more do I have to go ? 5870 ? 5970?

I do want to upgrade my system for hi def video editing and blu ray streaming. Do I need much faster CPU? Like Phenom II 6 cores? If so, which is the best motherboard to go with this CPU and GPU?

yes, that video card will play back blue ray just fine. no need to return it.

This is probably a hijack (apologies), but would x4 bandwidth be a big issue too? My board has a physical x16 slot but runs at x4 speeds and I was looking at a 5670-class card.

I have windows XP SP3. I will be using PowerDVD for blue ray playing, and BlueRayBerry for editing

Thanks for the reply. I will use the video card. How about my CPU, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ ? Is that enough or will I need more speed for blu ray video editing, and recoding.

I could not find either successful or unsuccessful reports of this particular GPU being used with the K9VGM-V, but based on other reports involving different GPUs, I would say the odds are not good. These VIA PCI-E chipsets have all kinds of problems with PCI-E 2.0 graphics cards, graphics cards with onboard/integrated HD audio or HDMI, and cards with 1GB RAM.

You could try it, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work. I recommend the latest MSI BIOS. Here is a bootable BIOS update CD image for MSI K9VGM-V BIOS Release 1.8 (latest available):

Standard ISO image file that should be compatible with any CD burning application. After creating the CD, you should find a README file on the disc for further information.

Yea, compatibility should be just fine.
I use a Radeon 5770 (which afaik is 2.1 as well, like the 5550) in a motherboard with Intel 965 chipset, which is 1.0.
Works fine.

even at X4 lanes, the penalty would only be 5 percent in performance...

Which has nothing to do with a VIA chipset.

I finally did get the Radeon HD 5550 video card and put it in my K9vGM-V motherboard. I had already updated the bios to v1.8 (thanks tcsenter). My system is very stable. I have been playing blu ray discs as well as mouted blu ray iso with PoerDVD 9 with no problem.
