Is it bottlenecking the current cards (4890, gtx285)?

What about next generation (5870, gtx380)? Will it bottleneck these?

I'm using GA-P35-DS3L with PCI Express 1.1

if next gen is more powerful, then PCIe 1.1 will be even more of a bottleneck

Please do another test when the new cards come out :)

there was no reason for me to keep my PCIe 1.0 MB
- we already know GTX 280 strains the bandwidth and it will only get more strained as the cards get more powerful

I've looked several times, and I've still found nothing showing any current video card being bottlenecked with pci-e 1.0. If you know of any reviews or tests, please point me that direction

Although I don't want to offense apoppin and his tremendous amount of time invested in that test, which is unique really , I still have some doubts about some of the results. It is very strange that 4870X2 sees no benefit whatsoever in PCI express 2.0 slot in one particular game where gtx 280 sees night and day difference and most of the time, we see only 1-3 fps difference, which can also be attributed to the already known higher performance that the X48 chipsets have over P35s, independent of the videocard's slot type.

4870-X2 has radically different architecture than GTX 280
--and you could even see the 4870 start to be limited in some circumstances

it is not "night and day"

BUT .. if you run a fast CPU and fast graphics, it would be wise to give them the biggest advantage you can for a balanced PC with a PCIe 2.0 [or 3.0 :p] mobo

Yes, but you have to agree that 4870X2 moves more data than gtx 280 does. So, one would expect to see a greater performance penalty, on a pci express slot 1.x over 2.0.

one does not always get what one expects :p
- there are many variables and the answer is not always simple nor cut and dried

e.g. for a long time, the popular belief was that in CrossFire-X the faster card defaults to the slower card's performance level

you can also see some limitations even with 4870 a couple of times
- let me use your argument for using Vista 64 over 32-bit:

Why use older tech?
