Are PCi-e slots backwards-compatible? That is, can you plug in a PCi card and have it work? Like USB 2.0? Or will companies have to come out with new PCi-e soundcards and stuff?

pci-e boards also have pci slots. i would assume that the bandwith of pci would still be sufficent to handle any sound card.
