PCI-E card to replace 9800Pro AGP

I finally went to a PCI-E mobo so I need to replace my 9800pro AGP.
I was considering a used 7300gs from here on the FS forum, so I asked for some help here in the Video forum.

thanks to the suggestions from them and the links provided I can see that was not going to be a good move.
I do appreciate the advice and suggestions, it prob saved me from making a bad choice.

budget will be tight if I change to a new mobo that has PCI-E that why I was looking at 7300gs

Don't get the X700. At best the X700 is equal to your 9800 Pro and at worst it is slower. If you want to do a comparison, goto Toms Hardware VGA Chart and compare using a Nvidia 6600GT.

The 6600GT performed equal to or better than a 9800 Pro, whereas the X700 performed equal to or worst.

If you want an upgrade of any noticable differenece I would recommend at least an X800/850XT card or a Nvidia 7600GS/GT.

If you plan to go higher and stick with AGP, there is the X1950PRO, but that sells for anywhere between $250-$300 and the Nvidia 7800GS for around $235 or $176AR. At these prices it might be better off upgrading to PCI-express cuz at least this way, you can keep the card with your next upgrade.

changing to a PCI-E mobo for sure. I just want to stay about the same performance level with this first PCI-E card.
I will upgrade the card in 3-4 months, just don't have the cash to do mobo/cpu/vid card all at this time.

About 2yrs ago I was looking for a replacement AGP card on a tight budget ,my choices were a 2nd hand Radeon 9700 Pro or a new X700 (which was more).
On comparing many benchmarks I found the X700 was about 0-8% faster than the 9700 Pro ,so I bought a 9700 Pro ,& saved myself about £20
Btw the 9800 Pro is about 10% faster than the 9700 Pro.

How about a 2nd hand card from ebay etc?

I'll be watching the FS forum for a used card.
I just struck a deal for a PCI-E mobo so I will need to get a card so I can at least test the mobo.
I may have just enough cash to get something in the 6600GT/X700 range...if not I will grab a cheap TC card as a stop-gap measure.

I would consider this 7600GS as an option. It's $90 plus shipping. It would be a pretty good jump from a 9800pro for the price.

The 7300GT overclock ones with GDDR3 (ones with 500mhz core and 1400Mhz memory for example) would be very nice bargains at the moment, and would be easily faster than a 9800Xt let alone a 9800pro

skip X700 pro altogether, can you? it is old tech, no sm 3 support, pretty much 9800 core with 1/2 of mem bus.

I would look into one of the following:
nVidia 6600 series
nVidia 6800 series
nVidia 7600 series
nVidia 7900GS
ATI X800 series
ATI X1600 series

If there's something out of those that fits your budget, it will most likely perform better. The 9800Pro was a solid card in its day. Anything on the lower-number end of the nVidia line really is geared toward general home / office use - stay away if you're planning on gaming.

The 6600 and 6800 series were especially powerful for their day - I believe most of them even beat out some of the 7600 series.

Geforce 6 was average, just as they should have been, nothing spectacular, Radeon 9700Pro and Geforce 8800GTX are spectacular

lol ,I think you've typo'd their ,I don't think my trusty old 9700 Pro would give an 8800 much trouble ,or did you mean at their release times?

i havent put it on the FS/FT forums yet, but ive got a 6600GT with a zalman HSF for sale! beast of a card, i loved it while i used it (got an 8800GTS for christmas/birthday).
