i have two comps. one is a dell p4 2.53ghz w/intel 845vg chipset, the other is a 1.3ghz athlon on an ecs ks75a. both have 256 mb of ddr memory. bus on athlon is 133, 533 for p4. i realized too late that the dell doesn't have an agp slot. both have ata 100 7200 rpm hd's.

i can use either computer. one with agp, one without. if i was to use the athlon with agp 9600 se, would it be that much better in terms of gaming than the 9100 pci with the p4, or do you think the P4 with pci 9100 would be better?

thoughts?

IMHO, with the lower processor speed of the Athlon and the 64-bit interface of the 9600SE, I would have to tip my hat in favor of the 9100 PCI/P4 combination.

None of them is a good solution in terms of gaming always.
P4 has a nice processor but a mediocre gpu,and athlon is mediocre with better gpu but not sufficient for the new games.
So if you don't want to upgrade ....

As attached as I am to PCI cards, I have to agree with M4H on this one.

I don't game much, it will be every now and then. but when i do, i do want it to be pretty decent gaming. I use the comp. for basic stuff most of the time, internet, emails, web dev.

I am not sure about the selling option as I only paid 259 bucks for the dell system. I do need two systems. lets say I get 500 bucks for the dell system (P4 2.53 ghz 40gig 7200rpm drive, 256 ddr, sony cd-rw, soundblaster live 5.1, v.92 modem), and get 250 bucks for my amd system (ecs k7s5a, 256 ddr, 40 gb 7200 rpm, cd-rw,dvd,v.92 modem). thats still only 750 bucks. can I make one decent and one gaming system with that kind of money?

is pci that crappy?

Pci is very crappy. But you could just spend a few bucks in a new MoBo with AGP for your pentiun 4 and a 256mb stick.

hmmm
keep the 40g drive, cd-rw, and dvd from the amd rig

shuttle an35n ultra (nf2 ultra mobo) - 63
barton 2500+ - 85
hs/f - svcgc68 5+s/h
512 pc3200 - 75 (buffaLo w/ samsung)
case/psu - 50-100 depending on what you like (350w psu min)
thats about 330 or so

get a 9600pro for 150, or a 5900 non ultra for ~200
mobo has sound, add a sb live for 15-35 depending on whether you want to get one used in fs/t or new somewhere

doesnt look too bad to me, beats my rig anyway, which needs a video card *almost* desperately

Hahahaha ? 9100 PCI vs 9600SE ?. That?s like being between a rock and a hard place.

Don?t get a 9600SE, it ?s about half the performance of a 9600. Get a regular 9600, it only costs a few dollars more.

A 9100 and 9600 would generally be close in performance with the 9600 pulling away in newer games and having much more usable AA/AF. I have to think the 9100 PCI P4 setup is going to be quite a bit faster than a 9600 AGP Athlon 1.3. I think the PCI is going to be much less of a performance hit than going to a Athlon 1.3. Besides, the 128MB 9100 PCI is probably quite a bit cheaper than a 9600SE or 9600.

yeah, that is seemingly the best option but keep in mind a new mobo means a new case, which means a new psu unit. the costs will add up.

You can keep the box and PSU you're using now, or do you mean it isn't ATX case?

i don't think the psu's are weird, they look the same as normal ones. it will have to be changed though as it is underrated, esp. if i plan to oc. i think its 250 watts.

Regarding the mobo, that is right, it is dell proprietary motherboard. weird. i do not think i can so easily match an aftermarket mobo to the rear slots, etc. of this case. the case is a Dimension 2400 case. looks like a mini tower.
