PCI 2.2 Cards Compatible with PCI 2.1 Mobo?

Can a PCI 2.2 card work in a PCI 2.1 mobo?

I'd like to add a SATA disk drive to my system to hold me until I can build a new system. All of the SATA PCI cards I've found are PCI 2.2, but my mobo is PCI 2.1. Will the PCI 2.2 cards work in a PCI 2.1 mobo?
