pcAnywhere locks up host modem if connection fails during ftp

Anyone got a clue for me here? At work we have a remote system hundreds of miles away that we have been accessing with pcAnywhere over a modem connection. It's been VERY useful to get in and see what the system is doing without having to travel to the site.

But twice now recently we have been in the middle of a File Transfer using the ftp utility in pcAnywhere, when the phone line connection just suddenly dropped. The result has been that the remote modem seems to not terminate the connection - it won't allow us to get back in again until someone down there goes to the machine and physically intervenes. After shutting it down at the remote site, we can get back in again.

Both the local and remote computers are Dell Dimension 8300 running XP. The remote has pcAnywhere 10.5, the local has 11.0

I looked at the Symantec Knowledge Base and found nothing.

Anyone know what's going on or how we can solve this one? Phone connections have dropped more than twice, it's just that those 2 times it was during File Transfer. Big bummer.

Thanks

turns out it's the modem. When we tried a USR Courier instead of the modem that came with the Dell, it worked just fine

Well, after a week of thinking we had solved the problem, it turns out that now the Courier modem is freezing up. Many times the Courier has done File Transfers and after closing the File Transfer and closing the Remote Session it has "released" the modem and everything has been fine. But it has now locked up on 3 occasions that were NOT dropped connections. After doing a File Transfer, and closing everything nicely, it quit being able to start another Session. Twice it lasted several hours and then "reset" itself. Right now it's been locked up for 24 hours and more, and we will have to send someone over to the host machine to get it going again.

What in the world can be the issue with pcAnywhere and File Transfers and modems?
