PC133 Memory problem

I tried to help upgrade a friend's computers. Both are Gateway Computers and kind of dated. As each ran on 64 MB PC100 memory, I suggested adding more RAM. The friend picked up PNY PC133 ( two 128 MB sticks). Nether computer boots with the new RAM in combo with the PC100 or solely with the PC133 RAM purchased recently.
Will I have to put in PC 100 Memory?
Or is the Gateway COmputer only able to use proprietary memory?
Thanks

Depends on what you mean by dated.

Easiest way to find out is to check Crucial Memory site for the memory upgrade. Crucial
More than likely it may be just an issue that it does not support 16Mx8 meg chips.
