Same message repeats "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in a selected boot device and press a key." There's no lag between pushing the power button and that message. "Delete" just makes the message repeat....

No computer starts instantly. It has to go to the BIOS first even if you don't see anything. Did you unplug your drive(s) as previously instructed? Turn your power supply off and wait 5 seconds. Turn power supply back on. Hit power button. Press and hold delete key.

Hey awesome! I was waiting for the text at the bottom of the screen like I've seen on all the videos. Holding delete while I started it worked. Thank you!

Bios keeps talking about usb flash drives. It sounds like I need to download something before installing windows. I updated my firmware already. How do I talk my computer into reading the windows CD now?

There should be options to set the device boot order, set the dvd drive to boot first and boot from the CD. There should also be an option to select a boot device by pressing a certain function key, on my Gigabyte BIOS it's F12, not sure on ASRock.

Yep, I set the cd/DVD drive to first followed by the hard drive. When I exit bios or try to run the windows cd it says "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" (I tried putting the cd in before booting and after booting. I got the same message.

Progress, Great! Do you know what finally got it to boot?

What do you have in the CD/DVD drive?

Not sure. I pulled the plug for the case fan control and plugged the system panel header plugs back in. Not sure what did it but it's working so that's awesome.
I've got the Microsoft cd in the drive now.

"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" This is telling you that the computer has no bootable media e.g. operating system.

To fix this try pressing F2 or F12 (thinks its f12) straightaway when you turn on your computer to load up the boot menu and select your drive you want to boot from. If your tryng to install the Operating Sytem from the DVD drive than choose CD/DVD. If you are taken to the Bios than restart your computer and use the other F key. The boot menu has a black background and has like 3 options to choose from. The options are Hard drive, USB and CD/DVD

Mine is f11 for the boot menu. I selected the cd drive and it said "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" same as. Before :/

Is your DVD drive connected properly? If not, go into the bios and check. A simple way to check is going into tools and go to system browser or go to advance and than to sata. if using system browser a picture of your motherboard will pop up and from there you can see whats connected to the motherboard. Make sure to click on the ports (sata ports, usb ports etc.)

if all else fails try installing your operating system from a USB device.

Yep, it shows up; ASUS DRW-24F1ST

I have to ask if your drive is attached, formatted and, made active?

You'd at least get into the setup utility even if the HDD wasn't attached.

OP, can you try booting from the Windows disc in a different computer (such as the one you're posting from)? You'll have a chance to exit out of setup before installing anything, so it won't hurt your current machine.

Maybe tomorrow. My old home laptop is not functional and I'm posting from an iPad.

Do you have any other bootable CD/DVD to test with?

Do you have a card reader plugged in? Might want to try unplugging the case fan control, any card readers and/or unnecessary usb connections, then try the install again.

A guy who's pretty good with computers told me today that it's probably that I don't have the sata reader program (or something like that) loaded. Si? No?

This wouldn't be a concern until later in the loading process. It would not hinder the loading of the Windows DVD. In your case, Windows has drivers that will work with Intel SATA ports, so this will not be a concern for you at all.

Here are some things I found in the manual which may be helpful to you:
This board has all Intel SATA ports, which is one less thing that can be giving you problems here.
In the BIOS, go to storage configuration and make sure SATA controllers in set to Enabled, set to mode to AHCI, and the others don't matter so much.
Go to USB configuration, make sure USB controller is set to enabled and Legacy USB is set to enabled.
On the Boot screen page, make sure boot from LAN is set to disabled. Look at Priorities (should be a menu in there) and made sure your DVD drive is at the top.

There is no such thing. It sounds like you have bad media although that is a bit on the unusual side. If the BIOS recognizes both the hard drive and the DVD drive then it should be able to boot. Do you have a USB key? It's possible to create a bootable USB key with the install media directly from microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only . It's actually the way a lot of folks do the install nowadays since it's pretty easy to bake in all the drivers & updates and have the install done in a pretty short amount of time, a few minutes if installing to an SSD.

Double checked, yes to all. Still the same message when the bios is closed. "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" if the drive is opened and closed the computer waits for a few seconds then repeats the message.
