I am having an issue with my pc...I currently am running an albatron kt400 with the voice genie, athlon xp 2200, 1 gig kingston pc 2100 valuram, lite on dvd rom, off brand (office max special :) ) cdrw, all with a 350 watt ps. Every time I boot up, i hear that voice genie start talking, it sounds something like "blah blah blah blah having a problem" I can't decipher what it is actually saying, but here is the kicker. When i unplug the power to the cdrw drive, it boots up everytime, no problem. I tried just having the cdrw drive with power and the dvd drive powerless, no luck, so I am pretty sure the cdrw is messing it up. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? In the rare occasion it does boot with both plugged in, the drive works fine, burns cd's and has no errors...I am completely stumped.

If you're lucky, maybe the voice genie will grant you 3 wishes, and with 1 of those wishes, you could ask for a fix.

but seriously, you should try flashing the firmware for that burner.
all major brands usually have downloadable firmware you can get, unless your burner
is really old, in which case i think it's time for a new one.

good luck :)

I am sure that it is right, I have the dvd drive set as master and cdrw set to slave, jumpers are correct...I am going to try and flash the firmware. If i leave the power unplugged for that drive, boot up, go to bios, and plug it back in, when I quit bios windows starts normal. Windows reports the drive is trouble free. I am stumped

try to plug just the burner in, with no dvd or anything connected to that IDE cable. see what it reports in the bios or if you still have a problem with it. Sometimes they are picky about position.

Ok, I flashed the firmware on the drive...still no worky, I tried just plugging in the drive without the dvd, still nothing. The model of my drive is a Cendyne lightning with the 24 digit s/n...If anyone has any more suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to those who already gave me suggestions, I am at a complete loss right now. I really hope I don't have to buy a new drive.

Also, if I plug in the power while in the bios, and save and exit, windows boots fine and the drive works...It just wont boot with the power plugged into it.

I'm guessing the drive is junk, you get what you pay for. The liteons at newegg are like $37ish, not bad.

You should never plug a device in like that after the computer has been started up, that alone could fry the drive.
