hi, ive got an old p166 system, when i turn it on all i can hear is the cpu fan, the hd and system lights turn on and stay on. There is no screen activity. I have to switch it off then on again for on average 5 times for it to bootup. Ive changed video cards, cpus and harddrives and it still has the same problem, so that would narrow the problem down to the motherboard i think.
Can someone please help!!!!

ps. the mobo is an Asus TX97

This same type thing happened to my sisters comp and when it would actually boot none of the pci cards would work. It was weird, anyways the problem turned out to be a bad power supply. Once we changed that everything was perfect. Hope you get it working.

ok, ive just replaced the powersupply and it still has the same problem. Is there some sort of timing problem with the mobo? ARGHHHH!

I have no clue, but sometimes when something like that happens, I just take everything out and put everything back in.

OK you said

<< I have an "OLD" P166 >>

maybe it's fulfilled its destiny? Time to upgrade maybe - 😉

Might be the HD. A friend of mine has an old P60 system with an old 1 gig SCSI HD and the systems boots but the HD takes longer and it doesnt post until the HD catches up.

There's a 486 in my family that does that, I take the case off, wiggle all the RAM, and it's fine.

Wiggle/reseat connections.

I've had this problem for some time now, and it's almost certainly the power supply. If not, it's the motherboard. I'm about to replace both, with a processor upgrade, anyway, so it's not really a problem for me... but for you, even if you've just purchased a new power supply, does it have enough wattage to boot everything you might have in that machine?

This is a typical case of a dead CMOS battery. The reason it takes 5 times before the system boots is because the CMOS batt is dead. Try replacing the battery but before you do you check all cards and connections are properly inserted and that the mobo is not shorting itself to the case caused by dust build up underneath it.

thanks every1 for replying, seems like every1 has got their own solution to the problem. Well im off to try them all out. Thanks again
