PC to MAC File Transfer

My friend just bought a powerbook and would like to transfer his files from his old PC to the new mac. I let him borrow my external HD to move the gb's of data. The problem is that his mac won't read my external HD. The HD is formatted in NTFS and I built the HD myself so there isn't any software that I got with it. I figured he may need a windows emulator or something, but I don't know mac's very well at all. Anyone have any idea's? Thanks.
