Holy Crapola:

Just timed how long it takes to boot up on one of my PC's and it was 15 minutes and 45 secs. Tried using XP pro system restore with no improvement. Changed start up settings to default wth no effect. Also used Tune Up utilities, Norton Antivirus and all kinds of spyware tools with no success. The PC runs perfectly except for the boot up time. Any iedeas what the problem is?

What's starting up in the msconfig?

It's entirely possible that some "allowed" items in the Msconfig could do it, especially if there's something indexing or scanning your HD every time.

Do msconfig and start pulling out unnecessary startup items and services. Alot of the stuff that goes in there really isn't necessary, like the Quicktime helper and such.

Well you need to make sure you have don't have any spyware, virus, trojan problems, then once that is all 100% ok, you should run a "CHKDSK" to make sure you don't have any bad sectors, clusters popping up or errors on the drive, because these could be causing the boot up problem.

Then if the hard drive comes back clean, there is the possibility of the controller on the motherboard going bad.

Oh and as Gatt said after doing all these other things check "msconfig" and see if there is like a ton of things trying to start at run up.

ALOHA

try backing up the stuff and reformatting....does it take 15 minutes from turn on to the login screen or from the login screen to the account being fully loaded?

How about some specs on the PC

Still wating for those specs. You could possibly have some serious virus or spyware issue with the machine, sounds like it might be a ton of startup files during the boot are lagging the machine. It could also be a problem with the HDD, they sometimes show this problem when they are going bad.

Ooops, sorry just read that you already tried to run Norton and some spyware tools, I would still put my money on that though.

Asus P4SP-MX
Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz
Seagate STS3120022A 120 Gb HD
AOpen DUW1608/12X DVD Burner
768 Mb Ram

Thanks all for your input.
It takes 15 min plus to have the account fully loaded.
I tried turning off all non essential programs needed to boot xp in msconfig with no improvement.

I put in my XP pro CD and set the startup options to boot from the DVD drive and it still took over 15 minutes. This probably means the HD is OK and the M/B is fried, right?

Solved the problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a bad SD flash card plugged in. As soon as I removed it, computer came back to life. Have no idea why it happened now because I inserted it about 2 weeks ago. Also, why would something like that cause so much havoc on my PC?????????
