PC starts up with messed up screen then nothing.

Hello,
My PC starts up with messed up screen(just loads of junk and a few letters, nothing readable) after my internal speaker beeps the screen goes blank and stays blank, nothing else happens after that, no windows starting up screen or anything, my monitor does not go into sleep mode so i know its still getting a signal. I have had my whole pc to bits and cleaned it making sure there is no dust in any slots and put it all back together but still the same problem. I even tried using one stick of ram then the other but both times the start up is the same, I also tried the graphics card in the other sli slot but got nothing on the monitor at all. I have popped the bios battery and reseated it but that never worked either. I think my motherboard is broken but I was wondering if anybody else had ever experiensed anything like this before I start spending cash on a new motherboard if i don't have to.

My spec is as follows:

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Hard Drive: 160 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Series GPU
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
Sound Card: Realtek AC97 Audio
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)

Any comments would be greatly appreciated as I'm at a loss.

It looks like you did a majority of the troubleshooting already. Have you checked to make sure the processor is seated correctly?

Yeah I've had it completly to bits, checked pins on proccessor and made sure there was no gap when i put it back in. I'm really really stumped.

Have you checked your videocard? What you describe might be a failing card. It's difficult to give an online diagnostic.

I don't have another card just now so I can't put a working one in, I will try that later though when I'm able to switch components around with my folks computer.

Put a newish graphics in, and it boots up perfect.
