The term PC speaker just makes it sound like crap to ur ears dosent it? Im looking for a 2.1 or 4.1 setup to use with my computer and mabey in the future as my dorm-entertainment system. I am looking for good highs and mids with a decent amount of base. I was thinking z560s but from what i hear from people is that they are all base. Then i was thinkin about a ATP 3, 4, 5 setup, they have good highs and mids and resonalble base. Anyone have any other recommendations, someone told me monsoon, but which ones...anyways i dont plan on spending anymore then about 135 dollars. Please help me out!

Honestly, you do not want to have a large 4.1 or 5.1 type of system in your dorm room...
I had a Creative FPS 1000, and all it did was get in the way.
A nice set of headphones might be nive, otherwise go with the Logitech Z's or the Creative 510D's (my choioce).

The Boston Acoustics BA7800s sound like just what you need. Great highs and mids, and an 8 inch sub for nice tight bass, thats not too muddy. A little hard to find because they dont sell them retail, but wait, I have a set right here, waiting to be bought...

LMK if youre interested.

vintage audio equipment off of ebay.

get an old receiver and two speakers from AR, advent, infinity.

Will kick the ass out of any computer speaker setup!

My setup:

Sony GX 808ES receiver (circa 1993); used as preamp/tuner only)
2 Rotel 960 BX (180w bridged) amplifiers (circa 1993)
AR 302 speakers (circa 1995)

cost of all that was $750.. but you can get cheaper/older stuff off of ebay. I bought all my stuff used, though from various sources.

And yes, I'm in college too.

klipsch promedia 2.1's are great. my roomate has one and the sound is crystal clear =) definitely makes it possible to tell the difference between 196 and 256 kbps mp3's.

I love my ATP3s, but then again I have nothing to compare them to in terms of PC speakers...

Actually, with a receiver you will hear a lot of noise/hissing/buzzing/interference at low volumes and the sound produced will not be as clear as what you can expect with a preamp or amplifier.

My suggestion for a dorm room is salvage whateve ryou can from a garage sale, the house, or a good stuff/buy/sell store. A preamp/receiver/speaker combo rules.

I think I'm going to go with the Klipsch 2.1s... but they are out of stock everywhere. Do that suggest a new 3 piece system is coming out soon? I wonder....

Yeah im leaning to the promedia 2.1s also, man it would suck if we get them and 2 weeks later theres a new 2.1 setup out :disgust:

Klipsch's ProMedia line is WAYYYYY overrated...

Logitech Z560, Klipsch 4.1, Altec Lansing 641s, Monsoon 2000s are all good choices. Check out www.3dsoundsurge.com for more reviews. I have heard the ATP 3 and they do NOT sound good at all compared to even the Logitech Z540s. There is no control on the base.....

For the price range I would say the Logitech Z560s. What do you intend to do with them btw? If you are listening to music most of the time headphones might be better....

BTW if you see "Bose" run the other way!

Only if you buy a bad receiver will you hear noise /hiss :) my combo is dead silent. Though I know my receiver used as a preamp only is holding me back some... I am thinking of building a bottlehead foreplay preamp in the future.
