PC shuts down during boot.

Ok

I have an AMD Athlon X2 5000
160GB SATA raptor
2x1TB sata drives (7200rpm)
500GB ata drive
LG DVD-RW Light scribe
8800GT
2GB 667 ram
Audigy XFi Audio card
600 Watt PS
Windows XP Pro

When I boot the machine, about 50% of the time it will make it to the XP splash screen, then power down. If I boot it back up right away, it goes to the Windows recovery screen, and I just select to boot as normal, and it works.

History

I just rma'd my first Raptor. It was starting to fail. It was doing the boot powerdown problem when I had it, and I had Windows 7 on it at the time. I figured the problem was from the failing drive. I just got the new one, installed XP, and it's still doing it.

I've ran memtest for over 24 hours, no errors.

I've done various drive fitness tests on all drives. No errors.

I've ran Prime95 for over 24 hours, no problems.

I tested the Power Supply, no problems.

Both Windows 7 and XP are legit licensed OS's from known good images. (my employer is a datacenter with a volume license). I used their image and key (with their permission).

Any ideas? I can't find any signs as to what the problem is.

You've already done most of what I'd recommend, but here are some ideas

Do you have the latest updates for the BIOS? Also, does the motherboard look clean with no swelled capacitors?

If your motherboard is one of the new ones with a power button built into the motherboard, disconnect the switch, and press that to turn it on, sometimes a frayed power switch can do something similar to that.

Did you try a different power supply. I've had startup problems before and it's always been due to either bad caps on the motherboard or bad caps in the power supply.

I haven't tried a different PS. I brought home our nifty power supply detector at the datacenter I work at.. It passed.

If it was the motherboard, why would it shut down, the power up, then pass prime95 on full stress for over 24 hours?

Did you recently install nVidia's 196.75 drivers?

Um, it's happened on both XP and 7, with two different OS drives. And those particular drivers, not sure, but i wouldn't consider it a factor since I'm sure the drivers i used for the recent fresh install were different than the ones with my 7 install.
