My pc continually reboots each time I try to shut down. Any thoughts on why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Did this just start happening on a pc that was working right? Or is it new/newly assembled? You may want to try just holding down the power button for a second. Also check the power management settings in the bios. Or trying hitting reset and then power a second after. sometimes one of those would work. there's a power switch on the back, don't just yank out the power cord :)

everman: I've had the pc for over a year now and it just started happening last night. I think I can shut it down by pushing the power button, but definitely not via: start: Turn off computer. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

There was a shutdown patch in Win 98 days just for this problem. DO you have Win 98 ?

Otherwise just restart and hold in power button.

You should be able to force a restart/shut-down by holding in the front case power button in, it may take as long as 10 - 15 seconds, so be patient.
Sometimes this condition shows up after gaming situations, as gaming software sometimes has poor exit programming.

A forced shutdown will also most likely cause a scan-disc run for error checking. When that is complete, visit the WinXP update site and see if
there is any auto-detect of an XP software program, if so run all updates.

You may also want to dump the Cookie and Temp internet files and do a disc cleanup and de-fragment while you're in this condition.

Ask the wrong question.... Guys, I am a bonehead! My pc will shut down, the problem is that it wont stay off. It reboots. Thanks for your earlier suggestions. Can you help now that I've stated the actual problem?

Stuck power button on case?
Something is keeping the POWER ON circuit active, either a stuck or broken switch.

Don't know which motherboard, how do I locate? I don't think the powerswitch is stuck because the system powers down and the reboots after a second. HELP!!

My computer at work running Win NT started doing that same thing. I can't get into the BIOS cause the BIOS is password protected(and the case is intrusion protected), but I believe that enabling APC (advanced power management) in the BIOS will fix this problem.

With Win NT, I can shut down the computer using ctrl-alt-delete and selecting shutdown form that menu. You can get to it in WinXP by logging off, then do ctrl-alt-delete-delete (yes, two deletes), then choose shutdown. This is a few extra steps, but better than pulling the plug each time.

It sounds like your computer is experiencing some sort of fatal error and it shuts down because you have it set that way.

Go to System Properties -> Advanced tab, then, under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button. In the Startup and Recovery properties windows that then comes up, under System Failure, select 1. Write an evet to the system log and 2. Send an administrative alert, and deselect Automatically restart.

This will not solve your problem, but at least it shouldn't pull the restart on you anymore and you'll be able to see a BSOD or some sort of message. My guess is that you recently installed or updated a piece of software, which caused some kind of problem with your system.

Hope this helps...

Go into control panel > power options > advanced > "when i press the power button on my computer" > "shut down"

similar option will be in BIOS, check both.

Already selected. still no go. And i just realized I'd already tried Igo Byte's suggestion earlier with no success. Unfortunately, none of its working. The pc immediately reboots after shutdown. It goes dark for a second and reboots. I'm going to try Sloguns suggestion now. Any others are very appreciated. Thanks.

My options are F1 and Tab. F1 allows me into the bios settings but there is no option to select advanced power management. Tab brings me to a screen listing the pc's specs. It does list advanced power settings and something else but this is merely a spec listing screen nothing can be changed except the language and something else (dont remember) I wouldn't think of changing. 3 days and counting. I guess I'll put the pc in sleep mode tonight....
