PC restarts itself when booting

For some time now I've had this issue where my PC will restart itself while in the boot process. It sometimes happen before it ever gets to the Windows login screen, sometimes happens right as it gets to the login screen, and sometimes happens right after I login. Sometimes this happen 2-3 times in a row. But when I do finally get through to Windows, everything is fine.

I have noticed that whenever it restarts itself I can hear a *click* noise come from the PC, which I assume is the motherboard. Haven't been able to figure out what's causing it...

FX-6300, 8gb DDR3 1600 RAM, Antec Earthwatts 650W, ASRock 970DE3, XFX HD7850 2GB, and a single 500gb HDD. All at stock settings currently.

The click noise would more than likely be the hard drive and I would suspect that is the problem but see what your event viewer has to say.

Download a utility from the hard drive manufacturer (i.e. Data Lifeguard from Western Digital, Seatools from Seagate, etc), create the bootable ISO, and test the hard drive for faults. If the hard drive is in fact failing, you'll want to do this as soon as possible as you may still have time to back up your files before it dies entirely.

If it isn't the hard drive, I'd burn a MEMTEST86+ ISO and test the memory through a few passes. If the memory passes, I'd next look at the power supply.

Depending on the manufacturer, download either seatools or dlgdiag (western digital) and run the hard drive test utilities. If it fails the quick tests, start backing up immediately and look for another hard drive. Does your pc have a built in speaker for boots? If it beeps a certain sequence, you can look it up (ie. long beep then short beep etc). If not, I'd check all connections then start testing each component, starting with RAM.

Beat me to it 😉

I've got a 3-4 year old SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ/ST500DM005 500GB 7200 RPM...
I looked on Samsungs website for their HDD diagnostic software but it referred me over to SeaGate and their software didn't detect my hard drive. I forgot to mention I have run MemTest86+ without any errors

However, I was just poking around in the case and noticed I had a 4pin connector in the 12v slot on the motherboard, which is an 8pin. I put the 8pin in there instead and it booted up fine - though that doesn't necessarily mean anything, there are plenty of times I boot up without issue. Could that have been it?
I guess since my old mobo was 4pin I just didn't even think about that when I got a new motherboard...woops.
